About Mariee Siou

Early Life and Music

Mariee Siou grew up in Nevada City, California. Her father, Gary Sobonya, plays the mandolin. He has Polish and Hungarian family roots. Her mother, Felicia, has Spanish, Paiute, and Indigenous Mexican family roots. Mariee started writing songs when she was very young.

When she was 17, Mariee traveled to Patagonia. She volunteered at a school for Indigenous children there. During this time, she taught herself to play the guitar.

First Albums and Tours

In 2006, Mariee released her first album, A Bundled Bundle of Bundles. She released it herself. A year later, in 2007, she released her first studio album. It was called Faces in the Rocks. This album featured her gentle acoustic guitar music. It also included the Native American flute played by Gentle Thunder. Her father, Gary Sobonya, played the mandolin on the album too.

Faces in the Rocks had a Native American theme. It included many references to nature and Native American people. Since her first album, people have compared her music to artists like Joanna Newsom and Joni Mitchell. Mariee has toured across North America and Europe, sharing her music.

In 2008, she recorded a cover version of "Lovesong" by The Cure. This song was part of a tribute album called Perfect as Cats.

Changing Her Name

In 2021, Mariee started changing her stage name. Her parents had named her Mariee Sioux. She decided to change it to Mariee Siou. She did this to make her name more connected to her own heritage.

Gift for the End Album

Gift for the End is Mariee Siou's second album. She recorded it between April 2010 and August 2011. The recordings took place in Placerville's Monsoon Studios and Nevada City's Sun Dial studios. Many of the guest musicians on the album were her friends and family. Mariee's partner, Sean Kae, produced and arranged the album.

A music review website, allmusic.com, gave a positive review. It noted that the album showed influences from artists like Joanna Newsom, Bert Jansch, and Nick Drake.

Gift for the End was released in Europe on March 5, 2012. It was released by the Almost Musique label. In the USA, it came out in April 2012 on Whale Watch Records.
