About Mariee Siou
Mariee Siou was born on February 4, 1985. Her full birth name was Mariee Sioux Sobonya. She later changed her stage name to Mariee Siou.
Her Family and Early Life
Mariee's father, Gary Sobonya, plays the mandolin. He has Polish and Hungarian family roots. Her mother, Felicia, has Spanish, Paiute, and Indigenous Mexican heritage. Mariee grew up in Nevada City, California. She started writing songs and poems when she was very young.
Starting Her Music Journey
When Mariee was 17, she traveled to Patagonia in South America. She volunteered at a school for Indigenous children there. During this time, she taught herself to play the guitar.
In 2006, she released her first album, A Bundled Bundle of Bundles. It was released by herself. A year later, in 2007, she released her first studio album called Faces in the Rocks. This album featured her gentle acoustic guitar music. It also included the Native American flute played by Gentle Thunder and the mandolin played by her father, Gary Sobonya.
The album Faces in the Rocks had a strong Native American theme. It was full of references to nature and Indigenous people. Since her first album came out, people have compared her music to artists like Joanna Newsom and Joni Mitchell. Mariee Siou has toured and performed in North America and Europe.
In 2008, she recorded a cover version of "Lovesong" by The Cure. This song was part of a tribute album for The Cure called Perfect as Cats.
In 2021, Mariee decided to change her stage name from Mariee Sioux to Mariee Siou. She made this change to reflect her heritage and personal journey.
Gift for the End Album
Gift for the End is Mariee Siou's second album. It was recorded between April 2010 and August 2011. The recording took place in Monsoon Studios in Placerville and Sun Dial studios in Nevada City.
Many of the guest musicians on the album were Mariee's friends and family members. Her partner, Sean Kae, produced and arranged the album.
