History of Mariestad
Mariestad was started in 1583. It was founded by Duke Charles. He later became King Charles IX of Sweden. The city got its name from his wife, Marie of Pfalz.
The city's coat of arms has an ox coming out of the water. People say this is what Marie of Pfalz saw. She saw it when she first arrived by the bay of the Tidan river in Mariestad.
Mariestad's Cathedral and Church History
Mariestad is one of only two cities in Sweden with a cathedral but no bishop living there. The other city is Kalmar. A cathedral is a very large and important church.
From 1583 to 1646, Mariestad had a special church leader called a "superintendent." This was instead of a bishop, for political reasons. In 1646, the superintendent moved to Karlstad. Mariestad's church area then joined the Skara church area.

Mariestad's Climate and Weather
Mariestad has a maritime climate. This means its weather is affected by the nearby water. It is located on the large lake Vänern. This lake helps to make the weather milder.
Mariestad often has warmer weather than other parts of western Sweden. This is because Lake Vänern balances out the low-pressure systems from the west. The town is also protected by islands and a peninsula. This makes it even warmer than areas further southwest on the lake shore.
Summers in Mariestad are usually sunny. Afternoon temperatures are often around 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit). Summer nights are also very mild because of the lake. Winters are usually mild with little snow. The lake is big enough to keep the town warmer during cold spells. This is compared to towns on the east coast at the same latitude. Lake Vänern often stays unfrozen during winter.
