Marinho Chagas (born Francisco das Chagas Marinho, February 8, 1952 – May 31, 2014) was a famous Brazilian football player. He was known as one of the best left-back players of his time. People often remembered him for his curly blond hair.
Marinho Chagas played for the Brazilian national team in the 1974 FIFA World Cup. He also played for many clubs, including Botafogo FR and São Paulo FC in Brazil. His career lasted from 1969 to 1987.

Playing for Clubs
Marinho Chagas was born in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. He was a very skilled left-back. He was known for his strong shots and for helping the left-back position become more attacking in Brazilian football.
He played for many different clubs around the world. He showed great skill wherever he went. His longest time with one club was four years with Botafogo from 1972 to 1976.
Playing in North America
Marinho Chagas spent two years playing in the North American Soccer League (NASL). In his first year, 1979, he played for the New York Cosmos. He played alongside famous players like Carlos Alberto Torres and Franz Beckenbauer. His team reached the semifinals but lost. Marinho scored 8 goals in 24 games that season.
The next year, 1980, he played for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. He played with German striker Gerd Müller. Marinho scored three goals in 19 matches. The Strikers made it to the championship final but lost to the Cosmos. Marinho did not play in that final game.
Back in Brazil
After playing in the US, Marinho returned to Brazil. In 1981, he won the São Paulo State Championship with São Paulo FC. This was a big achievement in his career. He also won the "Bola de Prata" (Silver Ball) award three times for being the best player in his position.
He finished his playing career with a short time in Germany. He played for a small amateur team called BC Harlekin in Augsburg.
Playing for Brazil
Marinho Chagas played for the Brazilian national team from 1973 to 1977. He played 36 matches and scored four goals. His first game for Brazil was in June 1973 against Sweden.
He played in every game during the 1974 FIFA World Cup. The Brazilian defense was very strong, letting in only four goals in seven matches. Brazil finished fourth in the tournament. Marinho played his last game for Brazil in June 1977.
Life After Football
After retiring from football, Marinho Chagas tried different things. He ran for city council in Natal but was not elected. He also released a song called Eu Sou Assim ("That's the way I am"). In 1991, he coached an amateur team called the El Paso Patriots in the US.
Marinho Chagas passed away on May 31, 2014, in João Pessoa, Brazil. He was 62 years old. At the time of his death, he was working as a sports commentator. He had three children and three grandchildren.
