Mario Casariego y Acevedo (born February 13, 1909 – died June 15, 1983) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He was born in Spain but became a Cardinal in Guatemala. From 1964 until his death, he served as the Archbishop of Guatemala City. In 1969, he was given the high rank of Cardinal.

About Mario Casariego
Early Life and Priesthood
Mario Casariego y Acevedo was born in Castropol, Spain. His parents were Mario and Ágata Casariego. When he was 15 years old, in 1924, he joined a religious group called the Clerics Regular of Somasca. This group is also known as the Somascan Fathers. He made his official promise to the order on October 3, 1930.
Casariego studied in different places, including Bergamo and Genoa. He also studied at a special school for religious leaders in San Salvador. On July 19, 1936, he became a priest. After that, he worked in a church in San Salvador until 1948. Later, he became the leader, or rector, of the La Ceiba Institute there. From 1954 to 1957, he helped guide his religious order. He was also the main leader for the Somascan Fathers in Central America from 1957 to 1958.
Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop
On November 15, 1958, Pope Pius XII chose Mario Casariego to be an Auxiliary Bishop for Guatemala City. This meant he would help the main bishop. He also became a Titular Bishop of Pudentiana. He officially became a bishop on December 27, 1958. Pope John XXIII himself led the ceremony in St. Peter's Basilica.
From 1962 to 1965, Casariego attended the Second Vatican Council. This was a very important meeting of Catholic leaders from all over the world. During this time, on September 22, 1963, he was made a Coadjutor Archbishop of Guatemala City. This meant he would become the main archbishop when the current one left. On December 12, 1964, he became the Archbishop of Guatemala City. In March 1968, he was briefly kidnapped by a terrorist group.
Becoming a Cardinal
On April 28, 1969, Pope Paul VI made Mario Casariego a Cardinal Priest. This happened during a special meeting called a consistory. Casariego was the very first Cardinal from Guatemala, which was a big honor for his country.
As a Cardinal, he had important duties. He was one of the church leaders who helped choose the new Popes in 1978. He took part in the special meetings, called conclaves, that chose Pope John Paul I in August 1978 and Pope John Paul II in October 1978.
Later Life and Legacy
Cardinal Casariego passed away in Guatemala City on June 15, 1983, at the age of 74. He is buried in the main church of Guatemala City, which is called the metropolitan cathedral.
