Mario das Neves (born April 27, 1951 – died October 31, 2017) was an Argentine politician. He served as the governor of Chubut Province twice. His first time was from 2003 to 2011. He was elected again in 2015 and served until his death in 2017.
Early Life and Education
Mario das Neves was born in Avellaneda, a city near Buenos Aires. His parents were from Portugal. He grew up in Santa Fe. He started studying law but left before finishing.
When he was 20, he moved to Chubut Province. He tried to become a professional football player for a team called Huracán de Trelew, but it didn't work out. Mario das Neves married Raquel Di Perna, and they had two children together.
He became involved in politics at a young age. He joined the youth group of the Justicialist Party, which is a big political party in Argentina. By 1987, he had an important role in the local government of Trelew.
Political Career
In 1991, Das Neves ran for Mayor of Trelew. He won the first round of voting but lost in the second. The next year, he became the leader of the Justicialist Party in Chubut.
In 1995, he was elected to the Argentine Chamber of Deputies. This is like being a representative in the country's parliament. While there, he worked hard against corruption in the customs department in Buenos Aires. He led a special team that investigated these issues, and people were charged because of his work. In 1997, he was even named "Best Deputy."
He was re-elected as a Deputy in 1999. He became the first person to lead the committee that protects consumers.
At the end of 2001, the temporary President Adolfo Rodríguez Saá chose Das Neves to be the Director of Customs for Buenos Aires. He left his job in Congress for this role. A few days later, when Eduardo Duhalde became President, he kept Das Neves in the same position. However, Das Neves disagreed with the Economy Minister, Roberto Lavagna, and decided to leave his job.
Becoming Governor of Chubut
In November 2003, Das Neves ran for Governor of Chubut. He was running against the current governor, José Luis Lizurume. Das Neves won the election. He received 45.6% of the votes, while Lizurume got 41.3%.
His relationship with President Néstor Kirchner, who was also from the Justicialist Party, became difficult by 2009. Das Neves said that Kirchner had become "arrogant." He also started the process of selling some public services in the province to private companies.
Governor Das Neves could not run for office again in 2011 because of term limits. He thought about supporting his wife, Raquel di Perna, or his sister-in-law, Senator Graciela di Perna, to take his place. In the end, he supported Martín Buzzi, who was the Mayor of Comodoro Rivadavia.
The election in March 2011 was very close. It was between Buzzi and Carlos Eliceche, the Mayor of Puerto Madryn. Buzzi won by a very small number of votes. This led to a recount of the votes and a special court order for a new vote in six areas. After a long process, Buzzi was officially declared the new Governor of Chubut.
In 2011, Das Neves also tried to become a candidate for President of Argentina, but he was not successful. Later, he was chosen by Eduardo Duhalde to be his running mate for the presidential election.
Death
On October 31, 2017, Mario das Neves sadly passed away at the age of 66. He had a heart attack. He had been fighting colon cancer for two years before his death.
