Marisol Espinoza Cruz (born July 30, 1967) is a Peruvian politician. She served as the First Vice President of Peru from 2011 to 2016. This was during the time Ollanta Humala was president. She was also a Congresswoman for the Piura area. She held this role from 2006 to 2019.

Early Life and Education

Marisol Espinoza was born in Piura, a city in Peru. She went to San José de Tarbes school in her hometown. From 1985 to 1991, she studied at the University of Piura. She focused on information science and journalism.

After college, Marisol worked as a journalist. She was a trainee editor for a local newspaper called La Industria. She also worked as a reporter for RBC Channel 11. Later, she edited international news for América Televisión. In 1992, she became the head of the economics section for the newspaper El Tiempo in Piura. She also took part in special programs at Florida International University and Northwestern University. From 1999 to 2000, she went back to the University of Piura. There, she earned a master's degree in economics.

Political Career

Marisol Espinoza began her political journey in January 2005. She joined the Union for Peru political party. In 2006, she was elected as a Congresswoman for Piura. This meant she helped make laws for the country.

By July 2009, she became a spokesperson for the Peruvian Nationalist Party in Congress. In the 2011 presidential election, she ran alongside Ollanta Humala. She was his running mate for the position of First Vice President. They were part of the Peru Wins political group.

On June 5, 2011, Ollanta Humala was elected president. Marisol Espinoza became the First Vice President. They took office on July 28, 2011.

In September 2015, Espinoza left the Nationalist Party. A month later, she also left the Peru Wins group in Congress. For the 2016 Congressional election, she ran as an independent candidate. She joined the Alliance for the Progress of Peru group for that election.
