Luis Alejandro Giampietri Rojas (born December 31, 1940 – died October 4, 2023) was an important Peruvian politician and a high-ranking officer in the Peruvian Navy. He was a member of the Peruvian Aprista Party.
Giampietri was chosen to run alongside Alan García in the 2006 elections. He became the First Vice President of Peru on July 28, 2006, and served until July 28, 2011. He was also elected as a Congressman for the region of Constitutional Province of Callao during the same period. Before these roles, Giampietri served as a City Councilman in Lima from 1999 to 2002.

About Luis Giampietri
Luis Giampietri was born in the Bellavista area of Callao, Peru. His parents were Luis Giampietri Berenice and Rosa Rojas Lapoint. He went to school at Colegio de la Inmaculada in Lima and San José Maristas in Callao.
He joined the Naval School of Peru and finished his studies in 1960. He became a Navy Diver and later specialized in Demolition and Special Operations. He continued his military education, completing advanced courses in naval warfare.
Giampietri had a long and distinguished career in the Peruvian Navy. In 1987, he was made Commander of the Special Operations Group. He rose through the ranks to become a Vice Admiral. He even served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Navy.
He also played a key role in creating the Navy Special Operations Force. This group is trained for very specific and difficult missions.
The Japanese Embassy Hostage Crisis
On December 17, 1996, Luis Giampietri was one of the people taken hostage by the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) at the Japanese embassy hostage crisis. This was a very serious situation where many people were held captive.
Giampietri, who was an admiral in the Navy, played a crucial part in the rescue. He helped the Peruvian military by secretly sharing information from inside the embassy. He received and spread many hidden listening devices and communicated with the military by radio. This intelligence was very important for the successful rescue operation.
His Political Career
After his time in the Navy, Giampietri entered politics. In the 2006 general elections in Peru, he ran for office with Alan García. When Alan García won, Giampietri became the 1st Vice President of the Republic. He officially started this role on July 28, 2006, and served until 2011.
During the same elections, Giampietri was also elected as a Congressman for the region of Callao. As a Congressman, he was the President of the Intelligence Commission from 2006 to 2007. He was also a member of the Defense and Production Commissions, which deal with important issues for the country.
His Passing
Luis Giampietri passed away in Lima on October 4, 2023, at the age of 82.
