Marissa Meyer was born in Tacoma, Washington. She went to Pacific Lutheran University. There, she earned a degree in Creative Writing and Children's Literature. She also studied Publishing at Pace University.

Before writing Cinder, Meyer wrote Sailor Moon fan fiction. She did this for ten years. She used the pen name Alicia Blade. Writing fan fiction helped her learn how to write. It also taught her to accept feedback. Before becoming a novelist, Meyer worked as a book editor. She also did freelance typesetting and proofreading.

The Lunar Chronicles Series

Meyer got the idea for Cinder during a writing contest in 2008. She imagined a futuristic version of "Cinderella". In her dream, Cinderella was a cyborg. Her foot came off at the ball instead of her shoe. This dream sparked the idea for her popular series.

The Lunar Chronicles is a series of four young adult novels. They mix science fiction, fantasy, and romance. Each book is based on a classic fairy tale. The series includes stories inspired by "Cinderella", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Rapunzel", and "Snow White".

The first book, Cinder, became a New York Times bestseller. By 2015, the series had sold over 651,000 copies. In January 2022, several film companies bought the rights. They plan to make an animated movie based on The Lunar Chronicles.

Other Novels and Series

In 2013, Meyer signed a deal for a new young adult series. It was to feature the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. This project became a single book called Heartless. It was released in Fall 2016. Students in Utah adapted Heartless into a musical. Meyer attended the show in 2021.

Meyer also wrote a superhero trilogy called Renegades. The first book, also titled Renegades, came out in November 2017. It became the number 2 book on the New York Times bestsellers list that month. Her childhood love for superheroes inspired this series.

In 2020, she released a standalone romantic comedy called Instant Karma. This book was chosen for a television series by HBO Max in February 2021. A follow-up book, With a Little Luck, was released in early 2024.

Meyer also wrote a duology based on the story of Rumpelstiltskin. The first book, Gilded, was released in November 2021. It sold 9,000 copies in its first week. It was also the top young adult title when it came out. The second book in the series, Cursed, was released in November 2022.
