Early Life and Creative Roots
Marissa Meyer was born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1984. She went to Pacific Lutheran University. There, she earned a degree in Creative Writing and Children's Literature. Later, she studied publishing at Pace University.
Growing up, Meyer loved fairy tales. Her favorite show was Sailor Moon. These interests later inspired her book Cinder. She also loved superheroes. This passion helped her create the Renegades series. Meyer even tried writing her first novel at age sixteen.
Marissa Meyer's Writing Journey
Before writing Cinder, Meyer wrote Sailor Moon fan fiction for ten years. She used the pen name Alicia Blade. She also wrote a short story called The Phantom of Linkshire Manor. Meyer says fan fiction helped her learn to write. It also taught her to accept feedback.
After college, she worked as a book editor. She also did freelance typesetting and proofreading.
The Lunar Chronicles Series
Meyer got the idea for Cinder during a writing contest in 2008. She first wrote a story about a futuristic Puss in Boots. The idea for Cinder came from a dream. In the dream, Cinderella was a cyborg. Her foot came off at the ball instead of her shoe.
Meyer signed with agent Jill Grinberg. She is still Meyer's agent today. The Lunar Chronicles is a four-book series. Each book is based on a different fairy tale. These include Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White.
The first book, Cinder, became a New York Times bestseller. By 2015, the series had sold over 651,000 copies. In 2022, Locksmith Animation bought the rights to make the series into a film.
Other Popular Books
In 2013, Meyer signed a deal for two young adult books. These books would feature the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. This project became a single book called Heartless. It was released in 2016. Students in Utah even turned the novel into a musical. Meyer attended the show in 2021.
Meyer then wrote a superhero series called Renegades. The first book, also named Renegades, came out in 2017. It was inspired by a misread sign. Her childhood love of superheroes also played a part. Renegades became the number 2 book on the New York Times bestsellers list.
In 2020, she released Instant Karma. This was a standalone romantic comedy. HBO Max bought the rights for a TV show in 2021. A follow-up book, With a Little Luck, came out in 2024.
Since 2020, Meyer has hosted a podcast. It is called The Happy Writer with Marissa Meyer. On the podcast, she interviews other authors.
In 2021, she released Gilded. This novel is based on the story of Rumpelstiltskin. It was the first book in a duology. It sold 9,000 copies in its first week. It was also the top young adult book when it came out. The second book, Cursed, was released in 2022.
Meyer has more books coming soon. Let It Glow, co-written with Joanne Levy, will be released in October 2024. Her book The Happy Writer is set to release in January 2025.
