Mark William Gross, born on November 30, 1965, is an American mathematician. He is known for his work in different types of geometry and a special field called "mirror symmetry."

Early Life and Schooling

Mark William Gross was born in Ithaca, New York. His parents were Leonard Gross and Grazyna Gross. He started studying at Cornell University in 1982. He earned his first degree there in 1984. Later, in 1990, he received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. A PhD is a very high university degree. His research was about shapes in a four-dimensional space.

His Career Journey

From 1990 to 1993, Mark Gross was a professor at the University of Michigan. He also spent a year doing research at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute. From 1993 to 2001, he taught at Cornell University. He then became a full professor at the University of California, San Diego until 2013. He also spent a year teaching at the University of Warwick. Since 2013, he has been a professor at the University of Cambridge in England. In 2016, he became a Fellow at King's College, Cambridge.

What He Researches

Professor Gross studies complex geometry and algebraic geometry. These are advanced types of math that look at shapes and spaces. He also works on "mirror symmetry." This is a big idea that connects two different mathematical objects. It's like they are reflections of each other.

Gross and another mathematician, Bernd Siebert, created a special way to study mirror symmetry. It is called the Gross–Siebert Program. This program helps mathematicians understand how these "mirror" objects relate to each other. It uses ideas from many areas of math.

Awards and Special Honors

In 2014, Mark Gross gave a special talk with Bernd Siebert. This was at a big meeting for mathematicians in Seoul. In 2016, Gross and Siebert won the Clay Research Award together. This is a very important award in mathematics. In 2017, Gross was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a group of top scientists in the United Kingdom.
