Mark William Gross is an American mathematician. He was born on November 30, 1965. He is known for his work in different areas of mathematics. These include differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and mirror symmetry.

Early life and education

Mark William Gross was born in Ithaca, New York. His parents were Leonard Gross and Grazyna Gross. He started studying at Cornell University in 1982. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1984.

He continued his studies and received a PhD in 1990. This degree came from the University of California, Berkeley. A PhD is a very high university degree. His research was about shapes called "surfaces" in a special mathematical space. His advisor for this work was Robin Hartshorne.

Career

After getting his PhD, Mark Gross became an assistant professor. He worked at the University of Michigan from 1990 to 1993. During 1992–1993, he was also a researcher at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI). This institute is in Berkeley.

From 1993 to 2001, he taught at Cornell University. He started as an assistant professor and later became an associate professor. Then, from 2001 to 2013, he was a full professor at the University of California, San Diego. He also spent a year as a visiting professor at the University of Warwick in 2002–2003.

Since 2013, Mark Gross has been a professor at the University of Cambridge. He has also been a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge since 2016.

Research

Professor Gross's work focuses on advanced mathematics. He studies areas like complex geometry and algebraic geometry. These fields deal with shapes and spaces using complex numbers and equations.

He is also well-known for his work on something called "mirror symmetry." This is a big idea in mathematics and physics. It suggests that two very different-looking mathematical spaces can actually be "mirrors" of each other. This means they have hidden connections.

Mark Gross and another mathematician, Bernd Siebert, created a special plan. It is called the Gross–Siebert Program. This program helps mathematicians study mirror symmetry. It uses tools from algebraic geometry. Their work helps connect different parts of mathematics. It also helps us understand complex shapes and spaces better.

Awards and honors

Mark Gross has received several important awards. In 2014, he was an invited speaker at a big math meeting. This was the International Congress of Mathematicians in Seoul. He gave a talk with Bernd Siebert.

In 2016, Gross and Siebert together received the Clay Research Award. This is a very important award for mathematicians. In 2017, Mark Gross was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a high honor for scientists in the United Kingdom.
