Market Square is a lively open space in the heart of Warwick, England. For hundreds of years, it has been a very important place for the town. It has been used for many different things throughout its long history.

A Look Back in Time
Warwick is an old town, even older than the Norman Conquest in 1066. One of the first big events held in Market Square was the mop fair. This special fair was given permission by King Edward III in the 1300s.
In 1806, the square was briefly called Mount Pleasant. Later, in 1855, a building called a corn exchange was built there. This was a place where farmers traded grain. It was taken down in the mid-1900s. Now, shops with flats above them stand in its place.
The Historic Market Hall
One of the oldest buildings still standing in the square is the Market Hall. It was built way back in 1670. Today, this historic building is a museum run by the local council. It's a great place to learn about Warwick's past.
For many years, there was a fountain right in the middle of the square. However, it was removed in the mid-1900s. Close by, you'll find the smaller Old Square, which is home to St Mary's Church.
Market Square Today
Today, Market Square is surrounded by important buildings and busy shops. To the north, you'll see Shire Hall. This is where the main offices of Warwickshire County Council are located. To the south is the Warwickshire County Museum, inside the old Market Hall.
The eastern and western sides of the square are filled with shops, restaurants, and pubs. It's a great spot to grab a bite to eat or find something unique.
Markets and Funfairs
The square is still a busy marketplace! Street markets are held every Saturday. You can find all sorts of things there, from fresh produce to crafts. On the fifth Saturday of some months, special Farmers' markets take place.
For four nights each October, the square still hosts the mop fair. This is a fun travelling funfair with rides and games, just like it has been for centuries!
Statue of a Champion
In one corner of the square, you'll find a life-sized statue of Randolph Turpin. He was a famous World Middleweight boxing champion from Warwick. The statue was put up in 2001 to honor him.
Getting Around
Most of Market Square is for people walking, but there are two one-way streets on the north and west sides. There are also a few parking spots available. Public toilets are open during the day and early evening. They have separate areas for men, women, and disabled users.
If you're arriving by car or bus, it's easy to get to the square. There are two public car parks and the town's main bus station just a two-minute walk away.
