A Look at Markham's Past
The area where Markham now stands was once known as "Berllan Llwyd". This old name means "The Grey/Brown Orchard" in Welsh. It was also the name of a farm. The village you see today was built on the land that belonged to this farm. Interestingly, the modern Miners Institute and Welfare Club are now located where the old farm buildings used to be.
How Markham Village Began
Things changed a lot in 1913 when the Markham Steam Coal Company opened a large coal mine. This mine was called Markham Colliery. It cost a lot of money to build. The company also planned and built a brand new village. This village was designed to house about 1,000 mine workers. Soon, everyone started calling this new settlement Markham.
The new village was a very appealing place to live. Many people believed that Markham was the first mining village where every house had its own bath! This was a big deal back then. On maps from 1947, it was shown as "Markham Village." Later maps simply called it "Markham."
The Markham Institute
The Markham Institute was built in 1928. The money for its construction came from the colliery workers themselves. It was built on land that used to be part of the Berllan-Llwyd farm. Today, Markham is a district within the community of Argoed.
