Marlette is a city in Sanilac County, in the state of Michigan, United States. In 2020, about 1,855 people lived there. Marlette is special because it is surrounded by Marlette Township, but it manages itself.
People often call Marlette "The Heart of the Thumb." This is because it is located right in the middle of Michigan's thumb region.

The story of Marlette city and Marlette Township are closely linked. They share many things like schools, the public library, and places to eat.
Early Settlers and Naming Marlette
Marlette was first settled in the 1850s. People from Ontario, Canada, came looking for tall trees and good soil. The community got its name from the "Marlatt" family. They carved their name into a log cabin.
Marlette's Growth and City Status
Marlette Township was formed in 1859. It was made from parts of other townships. Marlette became known as a village in 1865. In 1881, the village officially became a separate town. This allowed it to have its own government and taxes. This helped improve public areas. Marlette officially became a city in 1984.
