At UMD, Marques was part of a very successful team. His team had an amazing record of 25 wins and only 3 losses. They were ranked as the number two team in the entire nation! This team made it to the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAA tournament. The Sweet 16 is when only 16 teams are left in the competition. Marques was special because he played in the Sweet 16 for both Division 2 and Division 3 NCAA tournaments. This is quite rare for a player. Because of his great achievements, he has been honored twice in the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's Hall of Fame.
Playing for His Country: Cape Verde
Marques Houtman is a regular player for the Cape Verde national basketball team. This means he often represents his country in international games. One of his biggest achievements with the team was in 2007. They played in the FIBA Africa Championship 2007 in Angola. His team worked hard and won a bronze medal!
