Martín Berasategui's Life Story

Starting Young in the Kitchen

Martín Berasategui started working very young. When he was just 14 years old, he began helping out at his parents' restaurant. It was called Bodegón Alejandro. At that time, there were no restaurants with Michelin stars in the Basque Country.

When Martín was 17, he went to France to learn how to be a pastry chef. This means he learned to make delicious desserts and baked goods. By the time he was 20, he took over his parents' restaurant. He worked hard and earned his first Michelin star there when he was 25.

Opening His Own Famous Restaurant

In 1993, Berasategui opened his own restaurant. It was named after him and is located in Lasarte-Oria, near San Sebastián. This restaurant quickly became very popular. In 2001, it received its third Michelin star in the Michelin Guide.

His restaurant has been recognized as one of the best in the world. In both 2008 and 2011, Restaurant magazine voted it the 29th best restaurant in the world. This was the highest ranking his restaurant had achieved on that list.

Earning Many Michelin Stars

As of 2013, Martín Berasategui had more Michelin stars than any other Spanish chef. He has three stars at his main Restaurante Martín Berasategui. He also has three stars at Restaurante Lasarte in Barcelona. Plus, he has two stars at M.B. in Tenerife, which is the largest of the Canary Islands.

His restaurant M.B. in the Ritz Carlton Abama resort in Tenerife got its first Michelin star in 2010. More recently, he earned another Michelin star for Oria. Oria is a sister restaurant to Lasarte and is also located in the Monument Hotel in Barcelona.

Besides his four restaurants with Michelin stars, he owns six more restaurants around the world. Two of these are in the Dominican Republic and one is in Mexico. He also planned to open another restaurant in Costa Rica in 2014.

Special Recognition for His Cooking

In 2013, a special announcement was made. The François Rabelais University decided to give Martín Berasategui an honorary doctorate. This is a very high award in culinary studies. It was the first time this university had given such awards to chefs. Other famous chefs like Mikuni Kiyomi, Philippe Rochat, and Pierre Wynants also received these honors.
