Early Life and First Steps in Art
Martín Sastre was born in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. He became interested in making movies when he was only eight years old. He is the oldest of three children, and his sister and brother often appeared in his first art projects.
In 2002, Sastre moved to Madrid, Spain, after receiving a special grant from the Spanish government. During this time, he created one of his most famous early works, a series of videos called the Iberoamerican Trilogy.
Becoming a Famous Artist
Sastre's art quickly gained attention. In 2004, he won a major award for young artists at the ARCO Art Fair in Madrid. That same year, one of his videos was chosen to represent Uruguay at the São Paulo Biennial, a huge international art festival held in Brazil. The video showed a cartoon version of Sastre in a pretend fight with another artist, Matthew Barney.
To help other artists, Sastre started the Martin Sastre Foundation in 2003. Its goal is to give artists from places like Latin America the chance to share their work with the world.
Creative Projects
Sastre is famous for his unique and imaginative projects that often mix reality with fiction.
Diana: The Rose Conspiracy
In 2005, Sastre released a short film called Diana: The Rose Conspiracy. The film was shown at the Venice Biennial, another famous art event in Italy. In the movie, Sastre playfully suggests that he found Diana, Princess of Wales, alive and secretly living in Uruguay. The film was a big topic of discussion and showed Sastre's creative storytelling style.
Miss Tacuarembó
In 2008, Sastre began working on his first full-length movie, Miss Tacuarembó. The film stars well-known actors like Natalia Oreiro and Rossy de Palma. It later won awards for Best Film and Best Script at a Spanish film festival.
U from Uruguay: The President's Perfume
One of Sastre's most famous art pieces is a perfume called U from Uruguay. It is sometimes called "Pepe's perfume." To create it, Sastre used flowers grown by José Mujica, who was the President of Uruguay at the time.
The artist and the president collected chrysanthemums and other herbs from the president's own farm. Sastre then used these to make the perfume. He made only three bottles.
The main idea behind the project was to raise money for a fund to help other Latin American artists. In 2013, one bottle of "U from Uruguay" was sold at an auction for $50,000. This made it the most expensive perfume in the world, costing more per drop than even perfumes made for royalty like Queen Victoria.
