Life and Career
Martín Sastre was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He started learning about movies when he was only 8 years old! He is the oldest of three children. His sister, Maria Eugenia, and brother, Federico, often appeared in his early artworks.
In 2002, Martín moved to Madrid, Spain. He received a special grant from the Spanish government to help him. One of his most famous early video projects is called the Iberoamerican Trilogy. This series includes Videoart: The Iberoamerican Legend, Montevideo: The Dark Side of the Pop, and Bolivia 3: Confederation Next.
In 2003, Sastre started something special called the Martin Sastre Foundation for the Super Poor Art. Its motto was "Adopt a Latin American Artist." The main idea of this foundation was to help artists from poorer areas. These artists usually don't have enough money to show their work around the world.
In 2004, he won a big award. He got the First Prize for Young Artist at Madrid's famous ARCO Art Fair. This award was given by the Madrid City Council. In the same year, his video Bolivia 3: Confederation Next was chosen to represent Uruguay. This video showed a cartoon version of Sastre fighting another artist, Matthew Barney. It was shown at the São Paulo Biennial, a big art event.
In 2005, his short film Diana: The Rose Conspiracy came out. It was shown during the Venice Biennial, another important art event. In this film, Sastre claimed to have found Diana, Princess of Wales alive in Montevideo. Also in 2005, his foundation helped three German artists. They came from the Bauhaus University in Weimar to Montevideo. This was part of his "Be a Latin American Artist" program.
In 2011, Martín Sastre won more awards. He received the ALMA Award for best script. He also won the Best Film Biznaga Award for his first full-length movie. This happened at the Zonazine Malaga Spanish Film Festival.
Martín Sastre is a vegetarian. This means he does not eat meat. His favorite drink is Fanta Light.
U from Uruguay: A Special Perfume
U From Uruguay is also known as "Pepe's perfume." It's a unique art project. Martín Sastre made a perfume using scents from flowers. These flowers were grown by the President of Uruguay, José Mujica. A big part of the money from selling this perfume, 90%, goes to a fund. This fund helps support artists from Latin America.
The artist collected chrysanthemums and wild Uruguayan herbs. He did this with the president at his farm. The perfume was made a few months later.
Only three bottles of "U From Uruguay" were ever made. Just one bottle was put up for sale. It was sold at an auction on May 31, 2013. This happened during the opening of the IILA pavilion. The event was part of the 55th Venice Biennial.
"U From Uruguay" was sold for $50,000. This made the 33-millilitre bottle the most expensive perfume in the world! It even cost more than the Imperial Majesty perfume. That perfume was made in 1872 for Queen Victoria.
