About the Community of Ogoki Post
Ogoki Post is a community managed by the Marten Falls Band. It is home to about 400 registered people. There are also other people who live there temporarily, like healthcare workers, teachers, and police officers.
Getting Around Ogoki Post
The town has its own airport, called Ogoki Post Airport. This airport helps people travel in and out all year. The community also has a local community radio station, CKFN 89.9 FM. This station repeats broadcasts from CKWT-FM.
The only way to reach the community by road is through special winter roads. These roads are made of ice and snow and can only be used in the colder months. For a while, from 2000 to 2014, there were no winter roads into the community. However, the community has worked hard to keep these ice roads open recently.
History of Marten Falls
Marten Falls is known as the home of Chanie Wenjack. He was a young boy who sadly died in 1966. Chanie was trying to walk home after running away from an Indian residential school. His story was later told in a special project called Secret Path. This project included music, a film, and a graphic novel. It was created by Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire.
Future Transportation Plans
The Marten Falls community is planning to build a new road. This road would be open all year round, replacing the current winter road. The new road would connect to Ontario Highway 643. It would join the highway at its northern end, which is northwest of Aroland.
