Marthalen is a lovely town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the canton of Zürich. You can find it in the Andelfingen district.

History of Marthalen
Marthalen has a very old history! The town was first mentioned in official records way back in the year 858. At that time, it was known by the name Martella.
Geography and Landscape
Marthalen covers an area of about 14.2 square kilometers (which is about 5.5 square miles). A large part of this land, almost half (49.3%), is used for farming. About 39.4% of the area is covered by forests.
The town itself, with its buildings and roads, makes up 10% of the land. The remaining small part (1.3%) includes rivers and other natural areas.
Location and Features
Marthalen is located in a region called the Zürcher Weinland. This means "Zurich's vineyards." It sits between two important rivers: the Thur and the Rhine River.
The main village of Marthalen is famous for its beautiful half-timbered houses. These are old houses with wooden frames that you can see from the outside. The municipality also includes a village called Ellikon am Rhein. Plus, there are smaller settlements, known as hamlets, called Niedermarthalen and Radhof.
People and Population
Marthalen has a population of 1,933 people (as of 31 December 2020). In 2007, about 7.5% of the people living here were from other countries. Over the past ten years, the number of people living in Marthalen has grown by about 5.1%.
Languages Spoken
Most people in Marthalen speak German. In 2000, about 95.6% of the population spoke German. A smaller number of people also spoke French (0.6%) and Italian (0.6%).
Local Politics
In the 2007 election, the most popular political group was the SVP. They received 54.3% of all the votes. Other popular groups included the SPS (11.5%), the Green Party (10.3%), and the CSP (9.4%).
