Martin Doherty's Musical Journey
Early Bands and Meeting Iain Cook
Before Chvrches was formed, Martin Doherty was a touring musician for the band The Twilight Sad. He was also the lead singer of a rock band called Julia Thirteen. This band started in 1999 and ended in 2006.
In 2004, Martin met Iain Cook while they were both studying at the University of Strathclyde. They became good friends. In 2006, Iain Cook helped record Julia Thirteen's first album, called With Tired Hearts EP. The next year, in 2007, Martin joined Iain Cook's band, Aereogramme.
Singing with Chvrches
On Chvrches' first album, The Bones of What You Believe, Martin sings lead vocals on two songs: "Under the Tide" and "You Caught the Light". He also plays bass guitar on "You Caught the Light." For a short time, he also sang lead on the song "We Sink" during early performances. However, the main singer, Lauren Mayberry, later took over that role.
On Chvrches' second album, Every Open Eye, Martin sings lead vocals on "High Enough to Carry You Over" and "Follow You." "Follow You" is a special bonus track found on deluxe versions of the album. "High Enough to Carry You Over" was first performed live on March 13, 2016, in Chicago, Illinois.
