Early Life and Start in Golf
Martin Kaymer was born in Düsseldorf, which was then in West Germany. He started playing golf professionally in 2005 when he was 20 years old. He quickly became a member of the European Tour.
First Professional Wins
Martin got his first professional win as an amateur in 2005. This was at the Central German Classic on the EPD Tour. He won by five strokes, showing his talent early on.
In 2006, Martin played full-time on the EPD Tour. He won five tournaments and finished in the top 10 in almost all of them. He earned a lot of money and won the "Order of Merit" for the EPD Tour that year.
One amazing moment was when he shot a score of 59 in one round. This is a very rare and impressive score in golf!
Joining the Challenge Tour
Because of his success, Martin was invited to play on the Challenge Tour. He won his first event as a professional, the Vodafone Challenge, in Germany. He also won another event in France a month later.
Even though he only played in eight events, he finished fourth on the Challenge Tour's money list. This success helped him earn a spot on the European Tour for 2007.
Becoming a European Tour Star
2007: Rookie of the Year
Martin Kaymer started on the European Tour in 2007. He had a tough start, missing the cut in his first few events. But he soon found his rhythm when playing in Europe.
He finished well in several tournaments, including a tie for third at the Portuguese Open. He also had a great first round of 61 at the Portugal Masters. This was one of the lowest scores on the European Tour that year.
Martin earned a lot of money in 2007. He was the highest-ranked rookie and won the "Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award." He was the first German golfer to win this award. His good play also moved him into the top 100 golfers in the world.
2008-2009: More Success
In 2008, Martin won his first European Tour event. This was the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. This win helped him move up to 34th in the world rankings. He was the only player under 25 in the top 50.
He also won the BMW International Open, becoming the first German to win that event. He almost won a third tournament but lost in a playoff. Martin finished eighth on the European Tour's money list in 2008.
In 2009, Martin continued his strong play. He won the Open de France Alstom and the Barclays Scottish Open. These wins moved him up to 11th in the world rankings. He even finished tied for sixth at the PGA Championship, which was his best result in a major tournament at that time.
Major Championship Wins
2010: PGA Championship Victory
In 2010, Martin Kaymer won the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship again. Later that year, he made history at the 2010 PGA Championship in Wisconsin. He won his first major title by beating Bubba Watson in a three-hole playoff. This made him only the second German golfer to win a major championship.
Martin was also part of the winning European team at the 2010 Ryder Cup. He played a key role in their victory. After the Ryder Cup, he won two more tournaments in a row. This was a huge achievement, as few golfers have done that. He was named the European Tour Golfer of the Year.
2011: World Number One
At the start of 2011, Martin won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship for the third time. This win helped him become the number one golfer in the world! He was only the second German to reach this top spot. He held the number one ranking for eight weeks.
Later in 2011, Martin won his first World Golf Championship title. This was at the WGC-HSBC Champions event in China. He made an amazing comeback in the final round, shooting a very low score of 63 to win. This was the biggest comeback in the history of WGC events.
2012: Ryder Cup Hero
Martin had a challenging year in 2012. However, he played a crucial part in the 2012 Ryder Cup. The European team was far behind the United States on the final day. Martin won his singles match against Steve Stricker. His putt on the 18th hole helped Europe secure enough points to keep the cup. This was a truly historic comeback for the European team.
2014: The Players Championship and U.S. Open
May 2014 was a big month for Martin. He won The Players Championship in Florida. This is a very important event on the PGA Tour. He started with a record-tying score of 63 in the first round. He made a difficult putt on the 17th hole to keep his lead and won by one stroke.
Just one month later, Martin won his second major championship, the 2014 U.S. Open. He led every round of the tournament and won by a huge eight strokes. This made him the first player ever to win The Players Championship and the U.S. Open back-to-back. He became one of the few golfers to win two major championships before turning 30.
Recent Years
2015 Season
The 2015 season started with a big lead for Martin at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. He was ten shots ahead after five holes in the final round. However, he struggled and finished in third place. He also lost in a playoff at the Open d'Italia later that year.
