Martin Hughes Nesbitt (born in 1962) is an American businessman and public figure. He is a co-CEO of The Vistria Group, a company that invests in other businesses. Mr. Nesbitt also serves on the boards of large companies like CenterPoint Energy and American Airlines Group. He is well-known for starting The Parking Spot, a company that offers parking at airports.
Martin Nesbitt is a close friend of former US President Barack Obama. He helped with Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. Today, he leads the board of the Obama Foundation, which supports the Barack Obama Presidential Library and Museum.
Early Life and Education
Martin Nesbitt grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He finished high school at Columbus Academy. In 1985, he earned his bachelor's degree from Albion College in Albion, Michigan.
After college, he worked as a financial analyst. Later, he received a special scholarship to study at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He earned his MBA degree there in 1991.
Business Career Highlights
From 1996 to 1998, Martin Nesbitt worked for Pritzker Realty Group. In 1998, he started his own company called The Parking Spot. He founded it with investor Penny Pritzker. The Parking Spot provides parking services at airports, mainly for people traveling for business.
In 2013, Mr. Nesbitt co-founded The Vistria Group. This is a private equity firm, which means it invests money in different companies. He started it with Chicago businessman Kip Kirkpatrick. Both Mr. Nesbitt and Mr. Kirkpatrick are on the board of Rush University Medical Center.
The Vistria Group has invested in many areas. For example, in 2017, they bought Apollo Education Group. This company owns the University of Phoenix, which is a large private education provider. The Vistria Group manages over $3.1 billion in investments. These investments come from various sources, including retirement plans and large companies. Friendship with Barack Obama
Martin Nesbitt first met Barack Obama and Michelle Obama through Michelle's brother, Craig Robinson. Mr. Nesbitt supported Obama when he ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004. He also served as the treasurer for Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. This meant he managed the money for the campaign.
By 2014, Martin Nesbitt was helping to plan the future Barack Obama Presidential Library and Museum. He is now the board chair of the Obama Foundation, which oversees this important project.
