Martín Fiz Martín was born on March 3, 1963, in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Álava, Spain. He is a famous long-distance runner from Spain. He is best known for his amazing achievements in marathon races around the world.
Martín Fiz's Running Career
Martín Fiz became a champion in the marathon at the 1994 European Athletics Championships in Helsinki, Finland. A year later, he won again at the 1995 World Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden. In the same year, 1995, he also won the Rotterdam Marathon.
At the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, USA, Martín Fiz finished fourth in the marathon race. This was a great achievement, showing he was one of the best runners in the world. A year later, in 1997, he won a silver medal at the 1997 World Championships in Athletics in Athens, Greece. He finished just behind another Spanish runner, Abel Anton.
Martín Fiz represented Spain in three Summer Olympics in a row. He competed in 1992, 1996, and 2000. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, he finished sixth in the marathon. This showed his consistent performance at the highest level of the sport.
After His Main Career
Even after his main professional career, Martín Fiz continued to run. He competed in races for older athletes, known as masters athletics. On January 13, 2019, he set a new world record for men aged 55 and over (M55) in a 10K road race. He finished the race in an impressive 31 minutes and 36 seconds in Valencia, Spain.
Martín Fiz is the only athlete in the world to win six of the biggest marathons in the "Master 50" category. This category is for runners who are over 50 years old. He won the marathons in New York, Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, and London. These six races are part of the ‘Six World Marathon Majors’. This is a special international competition that started in 2006. It brings together the six most famous and important marathons in the world. Winning all of them is a huge accomplishment for any runner.
