Martín Galeano was a Spanish conquistador who helped explore and settle parts of what is now Colombia. He is famous for founding the towns of Vélez, Oiba, and Charalá in the Santander region. He was part of the important expedition led by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada during the Spanish conquest of the Muisca people. After the city of Bogotá was founded, Galeano traveled north into the lands of the Guane people.

Martín Galeano's Life

Martín Galeano was born in either Valencia del Mombuey, Badajoz, Spain, or in Genoa. He had a brother named Pedro Galeano and a sister named Ángela Jiménez Galeano. He was married and had a daughter named Marina (or Martina) Galeano. His daughter later became an encomendera, which meant she was in charge of a group of native people and their land during the Spanish colonial period.
