Charalá is a town and municipality in the country of Colombia. It is located in the southern part of the Santander Department. Did you know that the exact opposite side of the Earth from Charalá is in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia? This is called its antipode!
Charalá shares its borders with several other towns. To the east, it borders Encino and Coromoro. To the west, you'll find Oiba, Confines, and Suaita. In the north, it borders Páramo, Ocamonte, and Mogotes. Finally, to the south, it borders Gámbita and Duitama, which is in the Boyacá Department.

Where Does the Name Charalá Come From?
The name Charalá comes from the Chibcha language. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people. The name was given to honor the Guane cacique (a type of chief) of the village, whose name was "Chalala."
A Brief History of Charalá
Before the Spanish arrived, the area of the Santander department was home to the Guane people. Charalá was located right on the edge of the Guane territory. It was an independent part of the Muisca Confederation.
Modern Charalá was officially founded on July 23, 1540. It was founded by Martín Galeano, one of the Spanish conquistadors who took part in the Spanish conquest of the Muisca.

The main ways people make a living in Charalá are through farming and mining.
