Marumsco was a special kind of area in Prince William County, Virginia, called a census-designated place (CDP). A CDP is like a town or city, but it doesn't have its own local government. It's mainly used by the government to collect information for the census.
In 2013, about 37,218 people lived in Marumsco. This area used to be a big part of what was known as the Woodbridge CDP before 2000. It included smaller neighborhoods like Marumsco Village, Marumsco Hills, Marumsco Acres, and Marumsco Woods. Before the 2020 census, Marumsco became part of Woodbridge again. The name "Marumsco" comes from an old Algonquin word that means "island rock." This area is also part of a historical region called "Linton Neck".
What is Marumsco?
The U.S. Census Bureau decided to count Marumsco separately from Woodbridge in 2010. This meant that almost 90 percent of the people who lived in Woodbridge in 2000, and 80 percent of its land, became part of Marumsco. However, before the 2020 census, Marumsco was made part of Woodbridge once more.
Location and Traffic
Marumsco was home to about 37,000 people. It had about 5,000 residents living in each square mile. This made it a busy area along U.S. Route 1 in Prince William County. Many people who live here travel north to Fairfax County or the larger D.C. area for work. This means the roads can get very busy.
The Marumsco CDP stretched along both sides of Route 1. It went from Occoquan Road in the north down to Optiz Boulevard in the south. Further south, it continued only on the east side of Route 1, reaching as far as Rippon Boulevard. As of 2020, this entire area is now considered part of the Woodbridge CDP again.
