Marvel Smith's Early Life
Marvel Smith grew up in Oakland, California. He went to Skyline High School. While there, he was a great student and played football. He was chosen as an "All-City" player twice for his football skills.
College Football Days
After high school, Marvel went to Arizona State University. He played college football for the Arizona State Sun Devils. In 1999, he was named a first-team All-American. This was a big honor because he only allowed one "sack" (when a defensive player tackles the quarterback) all season. Marvel also earned a college degree in interdisciplinary studies.

Pittsburgh Steelers Career
The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Marvel Smith in the second round of the 2000 NFL draft. He was the 38th player picked overall. In 2005, he was selected to represent the AFC in the Pro Bowl. This happened after his team, the Steelers, won Super Bowl XL. Many people thought Marvel was one of the most important players on the Steelers' offensive line. This line helps protect the quarterback and block for running backs.
Unfortunately, Marvel had back injuries that caused problems for him. These injuries limited how much he could play in 2007 and 2008. After his contract ended in 2009, the Steelers decided not to sign him again.
Time with the San Francisco 49ers
After leaving the Steelers, Marvel Smith became a "free agent." This means he could sign with any team he wanted. On March 27, 2009, he agreed to play for the San Francisco 49ers. The deal was worth up to $10.5 million. However, Marvel announced his retirement from football on August 28, 2009.
