Mary Montagu, Duchess of Montagu, was an important lady in 18th-century England. She was born around 1711 or 1712 in London. She became a Duchess when her husband inherited his family's titles. She was known as the Countess of Cardigan for many years before becoming a Duchess.

Who Was Mary Montagu?

Mary Montagu was born Lady Mary Montagu. Her father was John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu. Her mother was Lady Mary Churchill, who was the daughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. This means Mary came from two very important and noble families in Britain.

Family Life and Marriage

Lady Mary married George Brudenell, 4th Earl of Cardigan on July 7, 1730. Their wedding took place at St Giles-in-the-Fields church. When Mary's father, the 2nd Duke of Montagu, passed away in 1749, her husband inherited the family's large estates. He also took on the surname "Montagu" to continue the family name.

In 1766, Mary's husband, the Earl of Cardigan, was given the title of Duke. This brought back the Montagu ducal title, which had ended when Mary's father died without a son.

Her Children

Mary and George had two children who lived to adulthood:

The couple also had other children who sadly passed away when they were very young.

Later Life and Legacy

The Duchess of Montagu lived to be about 63 years old. She passed away on May 2, 1775. She was buried at St Edmund's Church in Warkton, Northamptonshire, England. A beautiful memorial was created for her. It was designed by Robert Adam and sculpted by Peter Mathias van Gelder. The memorial was finished in 1781, a few years after her death.
