Maryborough State High School (often called MSHS) is a public school in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. The Queensland State Government runs the school. It is unique because it's located on both sides of Kent Street. Its school colours are blue and brown. In 2024, MSHS had 1330 students. This included 120 students who identify as Indigenous Australians. There were also 102 teachers and 60 other staff members.
The school has changed a lot over the years. It started as separate schools for boys and girls. Then, from 1937, it became separate state high schools for boys and girls. In 1974, the schools joined together to become one co-educational school. Since 2017, Maryborough State High School has been an Independent Public School. Today, it is the biggest secondary school in Maryborough. More than half of all high school students in Maryborough go to MSHS.
School History
The Maryborough Boys Grammar School opened in 1881. It was on the north side of Kent Street. The Maryborough Girls Grammar School opened in 1883. It was on the south side of Kent Street. An assembly hall was added to the Girls Grammar School in 1888.
Many students from the Boys Grammar School became very successful. Four of them even became Rhodes scholars. The Great Depression hit the schools hard. They had to close down. In 1936, the Department of Education took them over. They became the Maryborough State High and Intermediate School for Boys and for Girls.
In 1974, the Boys' and Girls' High Schools joined together. This created the single Maryborough State High School we know today. The original building of the Maryborough Boys Grammar School is very important. It was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. Today, this historic building is home to the English and Humanities departments.
Where the School Is
The school campus is located right next to the Maryborough city centre. It is split across both sides of Kent Street.
