Maryborough State High School (often called 'MSHS') is a public high school. It is located in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. The Queensland State Government runs the school. It is split across both sides of Kent Street. The school's colors are blue and brown. In 2024, MSHS had 1330 students. This number included 120 students who identified as Indigenous. The school also had 102 teachers and 60 other staff members.

The school has changed its name and structure many times. It started as separate schools for boys and girls. From 1937, it became a state high school for boys and girls, still separate. In 1974, the schools joined together. This created one co-educational school. Since 2017, Maryborough State High School has been an Independent Public School. It is now the largest high school in Maryborough. More than half of all high school students in Maryborough attend MSHS.

School History

Early Beginnings

The Maryborough Boys Grammar School opened in 1881. It was on the north side of Kent Street. The Maryborough Girls Grammar School opened in 1883. It was on the south side of Kent Street. An assembly hall was added to the Girls Grammar School in 1888.

Many students from the Boys Grammar School achieved great things. Four students became Rhodes scholars. Many others had very successful careers.

Changes During the Great Depression

The Great Depression hit the schools hard. They had to close down. In 1936, the Department of Education took them over. They became the Maryborough State High and Intermediate School for Boys. There was also a Maryborough State High and Intermediate School for Girls.

Becoming One School

The Boys' and Girls' High Schools joined together in 1974. This created the single Maryborough State High School we know today.

The original building of the Maryborough Boys Grammar School is very important. It was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. Today, this old building is home to the English and Humanities departments.
