María Josepha Sophia de Iturbide (born February 29, 1872 – died November 1949) was an important figure in the history of the House of Iturbide. From 1925 to 1949, she was considered the head of the Imperial House of Mexico. She was known for being a quiet and very religious person. María Josepha did not take part in politics. She was married twice and had two daughters.
Her Early Life and Family
María Josepha was born on February 29, 1872, in a place called Mikosdpuszta, which was then part of Austria-Hungary. She was the oldest child of Prince Salvador de Iturbide and Baroness Gizella Maria Terezia Mikos de Tarrõdhàza. Her father was the grandson of Emperor Agustín I of Mexico. He was also adopted by Emperor Maximilian I and his wife, Princess Charlotte.
In 1881, María Josepha's family left Hungary. They moved to Venice, a beautiful city in Italy. She spent her younger years there. People remembered her for being modest and very religious. After her father passed away in 1895, her mother married Count Emil von Jenison-Walworth in 1900.
Marriages and Later Life
María Josepha first married Baron Johann Tunkl von Aschbrunn und Hohenstadt. Their wedding took place on March 12, 1908, in Beszterce. Baron Johann passed away in 1915. Later, on April 14, 1923, she married Charles de Carriere in Bistriţa.
In 1925, her uncle, Prince Agustín de Itúrbide, passed away without having any children. After his death, María Josepha became the head of the Imperial House of Mexico. This meant she held the family's historical claims to the Mexican throne. However, she was a very traditional and religious woman. She chose to stay away from political matters.
Even though she was quite old, María Josepha and her second husband, Charles de Carriere, faced a difficult time. In 1948, the Communist government in Romania held them. They both passed away in November 1949 in Deva. According to her wishes, the family's claim to the throne went to her only grandson. This was Count Maximiliano Gustav Albrecht Richard Agustin von Goetzen Iturbide.
Her Children and Grandchildren
María Josepha had two daughters from her first marriage:
- Baroness Maria Anna (1909–1962). She did not have any children.
- Baroness Maria Gizela (1912–1981). She married Count Gustav von Götzen (who passed away in 1956). They had one son, Count Maximilian von Götzen-Iturbide (born in 1944). He is known today as the 'Titular Emperor of Mexico', called Maximiliano II. Maria Gizela later married Ottavio Stefano della Porta in 1959.
María Josepha's second marriage to Charles de Carriere (1875–1949) did not result in any children.
