Male
The symbol that biologists use for male

Male is one of the two main genders found in many living things. Most species, from animals to some plants, have two sexes: male and female. For example, human males are called men or boys, while human females are called women or girls.

Males and females often have different body parts related to reproduction. They also have other physical differences that develop as they grow. These differences help them play their unique roles in creating new life.

What Makes a Male?

In biology, a male is typically defined by the type of gamete (reproductive cell) they produce. Males usually produce small, mobile gametes called sperm. These sperm combine with the larger, non-mobile gametes (eggs) produced by females to create new offspring.

Primary Characteristics

The main features that define a male are their reproductive organs. These are the parts of the body directly involved in making sperm and helping with reproduction. For instance, in humans, males have testicles that produce sperm.

Secondary Characteristics

Beyond the reproductive organs, males often develop other physical traits, called secondary sex characteristics. These traits are not directly involved in reproduction but help distinguish males from females. They usually appear during puberty.

  • In humans: Male humans often develop deeper voices, more body hair, and greater muscle mass compared to females.
  • In animals: Think of a male lion's mane, a peacock's colorful tail feathers, or a male deer's antlers. These features can help males attract mates or compete with other males.

Roles in Nature and Society

Males play various roles in the life cycle of different species.

Animal Kingdom Roles

In the animal world, the roles of males can vary greatly:

  • Reproduction: The primary role is to provide sperm for fertilization.
  • Protection: In some species, males protect the group, territory, or young from dangers.
  • Parenting: While females often care for the young, in some species, males also play a big part in raising their offspring, like male seahorses who carry the eggs.
  • Competition: Males might compete with each other for mates, often displaying their strength or attractiveness.

Human Society Roles

Throughout history, human males have taken on different roles in society.

  • Historical roles: In many past societies, men often took on roles like hunting for food or protecting the community.
  • Modern roles: Today, roles are much more varied, and both males and females contribute to society in many different ways, often sharing responsibilities at home and in the workplace.
