About Mashona Washington
Mashona Washington grew up in Michigan. During her high school years, she moved to Delray Beach, Florida. She finished high school in 1994 at Lake Worth Christian School in Boynton Beach, Florida. Later, in 1997, she moved to Houston, Texas.
Mashona has two older brothers, Mashiska and MaliVai Washington. MaliVai was also a famous tennis player. He even made it to the men's singles final at Wimbledon in 1996.
Mashona's Tennis Journey
Mashona Washington started playing tennis at a young age. As a junior player, she won the U.S. Indoor National 18s championship in 1992. She also reached the finals in other big junior tournaments in 1991. She officially became a professional tennis player in 1995.
After a few years, Mashona had a fantastic year in 2004. This was when she first entered the top 100 players in the world. By the end of that year, she was ranked among the top 50.
Key Matches and Achievements
In 2004, Mashona achieved a big win against a top-10 player, Maria Sharapova, at a tournament in New Haven. She also reached her first major singles final in Tokyo, where she played against Sharapova again. Sharapova won that match.
Mashona almost beat Maria Sharapova again at the 2006 French Open. She was very close to winning the match, but Sharapova managed to come back and win in the end.
In 2005, Mashona had a great run at Wimbledon. She made it to the third round of the tournament before being defeated by Elena Dementieva.
Mashona also played for professional tennis teams. She was part of the Washington Kastles World TeamTennis team from 2008 to 2009. After that, she played for the Boston Lobsters from 2010 to 2012.
