History of Massillon

Early Days as Denson's Ferry

The area where Massillon is located today was once known by a different name: Denson's Ferry. This name came from a man named Joseph Denson. He operated a ferry boat, which helped people and goods cross the Wapsipinicon River.

Founding of the Town

The town of Massillon was officially started in 1854. It was planned out as a "town plat," which is like a map showing where streets and buildings would go. Massillon quickly became an important stop along the Davenport & Northern Railroad line. This railroad helped connect the community to other places.

Naming the Community

Massillon was named after a city in Ohio called Massillon, Ohio. That city is located about 540 miles (870 km) to the east. It's interesting how places can be named after other places far away!

Building the First Bridge

For a long time, people crossed the Wapsipinicon River using a ferry. But in 1868, the first bridge was built over the river in Massillon. This bridge cost about $4,000 to build, which was a lot of money back then! The bridge made it much easier for people to travel and transport goods.
