Massimiliano Edgar "Massi" Rosolino (born July 11, 1978) is a famous Italian swimmer who has now retired from competitive swimming. He is known for winning many medals, including a gold medal at the Olympic Games!

About Massimiliano Rosolino

Massimiliano, often called Massi or Max, was born in Naples, Italy. His father was Italian, and his mother was Australian. When he was three years old, his family moved to Australia. They moved back to Italy when he was six.

How Massi Started Swimming

Massi shared a fun story about how he first learned to swim. He said that when he was four, instead of using arm floats, he tried to swim with a headboard. It had a hole, and by the time he got out of the pool, the headboard had sunk!

His first real swimming lessons began when he was six. From then on, he kept learning and improving. He worked very hard to become a top swimmer. Even though he won many races, he remembers every single one with excitement. This includes his first regional and national championships, and even the Young Europeans competition.

Training in Australia

In 2002, Massi moved back to Australia to train with a well-known coach named Ian Pope. He joined the Melbourne Vicentre Club to continue improving his skills.

Massi's Olympic Success

Massimiliano Rosolino proudly represented Italy in four different Olympic Games. These were in 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008. The Olympics are a huge international sports event where athletes from all over the world compete.

Sydney 2000 Olympic Games

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Massi became a true Olympic champion! He won the gold medal in the 200-meter individual medley race. This was a new Olympic and national record at the time.

He didn't stop there! Massi also won two more medals in Sydney:

  • A silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle race. He set a new European record for this event.
  • A bronze medal in the 200-meter freestyle race.

Athens 2004 Olympic Games

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, Massi added another medal to his collection. He won a bronze medal with the Italian team in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay race. This is a team event where four swimmers each swim 200 meters.

Massimiliano Rosolino is known as one of the most successful swimmers in Italian history. He has won an amazing 60 international medals!

World Championships

Massi became a world champion at the 2001 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. He won gold in the 200-meter individual medley. He also earned three silver medals and one bronze medal at the World Long Course Championships over five different competitions.

At the World Short Course Championships, which are held in a smaller pool, he won:

  • One gold medal in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.
  • Two silver medals.
  • Seven bronze medals.

European Championships

Massi has also had huge success at the European Championships. These competitions bring together the best swimmers from Europe.

  • He won 21 medals at the European Long Course Championships.
  • He won 20 medals at the European Short Course Championships.
  • Overall, he became a European champion 14 times! Seven of these were in long course events, and seven were in short course events.
