Matías Moreno: A Spanish Artist
Early Life and Art Training
Matías Moreno was born in a place called Fuente el Saz de Jarama in Spain. His father was a doctor. Matías started studying art in Barcelona. He went to the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi from 1854 to 1856.
After that, he moved to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. There, he learned from important teachers like Carlos Luis de Ribera and Federico de Madrazo. He finished his art education by copying famous paintings. He studied works by Italian and Dutch masters at the Museo del Prado. He was especially inspired by the great Spanish painter Diego Velázquez.
First Art Shows and Awards
Matías Moreno showed his art for the first time in a big exhibition. This was at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1864. He won a third-class medal for his painting, "Portrait of Miss J.M." This was probably a painting of Josefa, who he married in 1870.
In 1866, he became a professor at the Instituto del Toledo. He also won another medal at the Exhibition that year. This award was for his painting of Alfonso el Sabio. The painting showed the king claiming the sea after taking the city of Cádiz.
Working in Toledo and Paris
In 1870, Matías became a special member of the San Fernando Academy. He also joined a group that looked after old monuments in the area. That same year, he showed some of his paintings at the Paris Salon. After 1872, he started spending his summers in Paris.
Around 1873, Matías focused a lot on his art and teaching his daughter, Maria. Maria later wanted to become a painter too.
Restoring Famous Art
Around this time, Matías also helped fix some paintings by El Greco. The Museo del Prado had recently bought these artworks. One of the paintings he helped restore was The Burial of the Count of Orgaz. People said he worked very hard on these restoration projects. Sadly, his daughter Maria passed away in 1895 when she was 22 years old. After this, Matías painted much less often.
Later Life and Public Service
In 1902, Matías Moreno remarried. He then focused on his new daughter-in-law, Maria Luisa. She later became a professor who taught about ceramics. At this time, Matías also started working more on sculpture. He became the head of the College of Industrial Arts. He held this job until he passed away.
In 1905, he was chosen to be part of the city council in Toledo. He was a member of the Liberal Party. Matías passed away in Toledo. His death was due to an illness caused by stress from a work issue at the college. However, he was found innocent of any wrongdoing.
