Early Life and School
Matthew Robert Patrick was born on November 15, 1986, in Medina, Ohio. His friends started calling him "MatPat" when he was in sixth grade. As an only child, MatPat loved video games, theater, and school from a young age.
He was the top student in his high school class. He earned a scholarship to Duke University. In 2009, he graduated with degrees in theater and psychology. He focused on how the brain works, called neuroscience.
MatPat's YouTube Journey
After college, MatPat moved to New York City to become an actor. He performed in plays but didn't find much success. For two years, he was unemployed. His first YouTube videos were actually auditions for plays.
In 2011, he decided to change his YouTube channel. He wanted it to show off his skills in writing, research, and video editing. He was inspired by a show called Extra Credits that talked about learning new things through fun topics.
Starting Game Theory
MatPat uploaded the first episode of Game Theory on April 18, 2011. In this video, he talked about the science behind the 1995 video game Chrono Trigger. His channel slowly grew, and his videos were featured on popular gaming websites.
In 2015, MatPat launched a new channel called Film Theory. This channel explores movies and TV shows. It gained over one million subscribers in just one month!
GTLive and Other Shows
MatPat also started a live gaming channel called GTLive on August 26, 2015. On this channel, he plays games and reacts to videos with his wife, Stephanie. These videos are often unedited and pre-recorded.
In 2016, MatPat created a show for YouTube Premium called MatPat's Game Lab. In this show, he put gamers into real-life situations that were like video games. This included things like defusing bombs or doing parkour. He also appeared in other YouTube Premium shows.
Charity Work and New Channels
In 2019, The Game Theorists held a 9-hour charity livestream. They raised $1.3 million for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. They held two more charity streams for St. Jude in 2020 and 2021.
The third "Theory" channel, The Food Theorists, started in July 2020. This channel uses science and psychology to explain theories about food. It quickly gained millions of subscribers.
On February 18, 2023, MatPat launched his fourth "Theory" channel, The Style Theorists. This channel explores the science, history, and psychology of fashion. It reached one million subscribers in just three days!
MatPat also hosted the 13th Streamy Awards in August 2023. This show had 15 million views in its first two days, making it the most-watched Streamy Awards ever.
Stepping Down as Host
On January 9, 2024, MatPat announced in a video that he would stop hosting his channels on March 9. Other members of his team would take over as hosts for each channel. MatPat explained that he and his wife had been planning this change for years. He wanted to spend more time with his family and work on new creative projects. He still plans to make occasional appearances on the channels.
Other Projects and Collaborations
MatPat has been involved in many other projects. He helped bring more attention to the web series Terrain of Magical Expertise. He also lent his voice to characters in animated shows like Transformers: Titans Return.
In 2019, MatPat worked with Nickelodeon on a show called Fact or Nicktion. In this show, he looked at things from Nickelodeon cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants to see if they could happen in real life.
MatPat is also a co-producer for the Broadway play Grey House.
He is very well-known in the Five Nights at Freddy's fan community because of his many theory videos about the game. He even had a small role as a waiter in the 2023 film adaptation.
