Matchaponix Brook facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Matchaponix Brook is a stream, also called a tributary, that flows into the South River. It is located in Monmouth and Middlesex counties in New Jersey, United States.

Where Does Matchaponix Brook Start?

The name Matchaponix Brook comes from the Lenape language. It means "country of poor bread." This stream begins in Englishtown. It forms where two smaller streams, Weamaconk Creek and McGellairds Brook, meet. This meeting point is also near where another stream, Manalapan Brook, begins.

The Brook's Journey

Matchaponix Brook flows along a path that takes it through different areas. It meets Pine Brook right at the line between Monmouth and Middlesex counties. Once it enters Middlesex County, it helps create the border between Old Bridge and Monroe Townships.

The brook then turns west and later north. It flows around the Old Bridge Airport. After this, it meets Barclay Brook near a small community called Texas. From there, it continues north. Finally, Matchaponix Brook joins Manalapan Brook. Together, they form the South River and Duhernal Lake.

What is a Drainage Area?

A drainage area is the total land area where rainfall and melted snow collect. This water then flows into a particular stream, river, or lake. For Matchaponix Brook, its drainage area covers about 41.7 square miles. This means all the water that falls on this large area eventually flows into Matchaponix Brook.

Streams That Join Matchaponix Brook

Several smaller streams flow into Matchaponix Brook, adding to its water. These are called its tributaries.

  • Barclay Brook
  • Pine Brook
  • Weamaconk Creek
  • McGellairds Brook
