Mateja Matevski (born March 13, 1929 – died June 6, 2018) was an important writer from Macedonia. He was known as a poet, someone who wrote about books and plays (a critic), an essayist, and a translator. He helped shape modern Macedonian literature.

Early Life and Education

Mateja Matevski was born on March 13, 1929, in Istanbul, Turkey. His family was Albanian and followed the Eastern Orthodox Christian faith. They were living in Turkey for work at the time.

He later studied at the Faculty of Philology in Skopje, which is the capital city of North Macedonia. This is where he learned about languages and literature.

His Career in Media and Culture

Matevski had a very busy and important career. He worked as a journalist for Macedonian Radio and Television. He was also an editor for cultural and literary programs. Later, he became the editor-in-chief and even the director of the Television station. He also served as the Director General of Radio Television Skopje.

Beyond media, he was involved in government and publishing. He was the president of a group that handled cultural relations with other countries. He was also a member of the presidency of SR Macedonia, which was a high-level political role. He worked as an editor for the publishing house "Koco Racin."

Matevski also shared his knowledge by teaching. He was a professor at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Skopje. There, he taught about the history of world drama (plays).

Contributions to Literature

Mateja Matevski was a key figure in Macedonian poetry. He was part of the second generation of poets who grew up as their country became independent in the 1950s. These poets helped shape the direction of modern Macedonian literature.

Mateja Matevski passed away on June 6, 2018, in Skopje, Macedonia. He was 89 years old. His funeral was held at the Butel City Cemetery in Skopje.
