A Key Moment in Chilean History
In 1810, Chile was part of the Spanish Empire. It was called the Captaincy General of Chile. Mateo de Toro Zambrano was the most senior military leader there. He was also the Royal Governor of Chile, meaning he was in charge for the King of Spain.
The First Step Towards Independence
On September 18, 1810, Mateo de Toro Zambrano called a very important meeting. He gathered many leading citizens of Chile. At this meeting, the group decided to elect a new governing body. This new group was called a junta.
This action was similar to what was happening in other Spanish colonies that were starting to rebel. In Chile, this meeting is seen as the very first step towards Chilean independence.
Leading the First Government Junta
Mateo de Toro Zambrano was chosen to be the President of this First Government Junta. This was a very important role. However, he was already 83 years old at the time.
He passed away on February 26, 1811, less than a year after the junta was formed. Because of his age and early death, he could not play a bigger part in Chile's fight for independence.
