Matina is a special area called a district in the Matina canton. It is found in the Limón province of Costa Rica.
History of Matina
In 1747, a main fort called Fuerte de San Fernando de Matina was taken over. It was captured by British Baymen and Miskito Sambus from the Mosquito Coast. This area was rich in cacao (which is used to make chocolate!). After the fort was captured, the cacao farms were badly damaged.
Matina was officially created on June 24, 1969. This happened when a special law, Ley 4344, was passed.
