Matt Brann's Musical Journey
Starting Out as a Drummer
Matt Brann began playing drums when he was 12 years old. When he was 14, while attending Exeter High School, he joined a band called Second Opinion. He played with some school friends, including Jason McCaslin, who later became the bassist for the Canadian rock band Sum 41. They performed together for about five years in their local town and around Toronto, Ontario.
Joining Avril Lavigne's Band
In 2002, Matt got a big opportunity. A friend of his, who shared the same management as Avril Lavigne, had just signed a music deal. Avril needed to put a band together for her music. Matt contacted her management company, Nettwerk, and they flew him to New York to meet Avril. He tried out for the drummer's spot and successfully became a member of Avril Lavigne's band.
Matt Brann, along with Avril Lavigne and guitarist Evan Taubenfeld, helped write a song called "Freak Out." This song was featured on Avril Lavigne's second album, Under My Skin.
Touring and Other Projects
Matt also performed a cover of Blur's song "Song 2" during Avril Lavigne's Bonez Tour. For this song, Avril played the drums, and Matt sang the vocals. After an 18-month world tour with Avril, which began in September 2004, Matt and the rest of the band took a break. During this time, Avril pursued an acting career.
While on break, Matt returned to the studio. He worked with the band The New Cities on their albums. He also appeared in the music video for "Makes No Difference" by Sum 41. Today, Matt manages the Toronto-based band Organ Thieves, which includes Sum 41 guitarist Dave Baksh. He has also recorded and played live drums for The Operation M.D., a garage rock band that features Jason McCaslin from Sum 41.
