Early Life and Music
Evan Taubenfeld was born in Baltimore, Maryland. His parents, Mark and Ami Taubenfeld, ran a catering business. Evan has two younger siblings: a brother named Drew and a sister named Annie. He finished school at McDonogh School in 2001.
Evan loved music from a very young age. He started playing the piano as a toddler. Later, he got a small drum set and then a full-size one. In seventh grade, he played drums in a band called The Suburbanites. When he was 15, he taught himself to play the guitar. He learned by playing "Come As You Are" by Nirvana. Three years later, he started a band called Spinfire with his friend Matt Halpern. In this band, Evan sang and played guitar. They performed in the Baltimore area and wrote their own songs.
Music Career
Working with Avril Lavigne
Evan Taubenfeld thought about going to music college, but he decided to try to get his band signed by a major record label instead. When his bandmates chose to go to college, Evan made a demo of his own songs. He sent it to a music executive named Josh Sarubin. Josh had met Evan when he was in Spinfire.
Evan got a call from Josh, who asked him to try out for a new singer's band in New York City. This singer was a young Canadian artist named Avril Lavigne. Evan joined her band in 2002. At that time, Avril's first album, Let Go, was already recorded.
For Avril's second album, Under My Skin, Evan helped write some songs. He got credit for the music on "Don't Tell Me", "Take Me Away", and "Freak Out". Besides being her lead guitarist, he also became her music director. He and Avril became close friends. Evan left her touring band in September 2004. He then signed a deal to write songs for EMI Music Publishing. After that, he got his own record deal with Sire/Warner Bros. Records in October 2004.
Evan continued to work with Avril Lavigne for many years. In 2010, he played "Complicated" and "Girlfriend" with Avril and her band. For her 2011 album, Goodbye Lullaby, Evan helped write three songs. He also sang on the song "Push". He played several instruments and helped with recording and producing the album. Later, he opened for Avril Lavigne on her 2011 Black Star World Tour in North America.
Solo Music and Other Projects
In 2003, while still playing with Avril Lavigne, Evan started a band called Ditch Ruxton. They played one show before the group broke up.
In 2008, Evan Taubenfeld produced two songs for the rapper Tyga's first album, No Introduction. He also produced music for other groups like The Pack and Oreskaband.
For his own music, Evan formed a band called The Black List Club. His first solo song, "Boy Meets Girl", came out in March 2009. He wrote it with other artists like Adam Richman and Bleu. To promote his song, Evan toured with bands like Metro Station and Mayday Parade.
Evan's Christmas song, "Merry Swiftmas (Even Though I Celebrate Chanukah)", was released in late 2009. It reached number 59 on the Hot Country Songs chart. His album, Welcome to the Blacklist Club, was released in May 2010. Since then, he has continued to record and release songs, but not full albums.
Evan was also the main music director for an MTV show called Kaya. This show was about a girl who got a record deal with her band. Evan helped write, record, and produce the music for the show. He also acted in a web series called Private as Blake Pearson. He produced for another MTV show called Pageant Place.
In 2012, Evan Taubenfeld helped write the song "Shine" for The Used album Vulnerable. That same year, he produced music for the Japanese band Stereopony. He also worked with them on a song called "Just Rock With Me". People even called their collaboration "Evanpony".
