Music Career
Sum 41 (1998–2006; 2015–present)
Dave Baksh joined Sum 41 in 1997. He was the third member to join after Deryck Whibley and Steve Jocz started the band in 1996. Dave was the lead guitarist and also sang backup vocals. He used the nicknames "Dave Brownsound" and "Hot Chocolate." These names were inspired by his Indian heritage and a guitar sound called "brown sound." He has said that his favorite Sum 41 songs are "Mr. Amsterdam," "Machine Gun," "Pain for Pleasure," and "The Bitter End." He liked playing "Pieces" the least.
Dave also used the name Pleasure in Sum 41's other band, Pain For Pleasure. In this band, the members of Sum 41 pretended to be an 1980s metal band. Dave played lead guitar on their first EP called Half Hour of Power (2000). He also played on the albums All Killer No Filler (2001), Does This Look Infected? (2002), and Chuck (2004). He left the band in 2006.
On July 23, 2015, Sum 41 played a comeback show. DMC and Dave Baksh joined them as guests. On August 14, 2015, it was officially announced that Dave had returned to Sum 41. He was part of the band's sixth studio album, 13 Voices, which came out on October 7, 2016. He stayed with the band for their next two albums, Order in Decline (2019) and their final album, Heaven :x: Hell (2024).
In an interview in 2019, Dave said he regretted leaving Sum 41. He felt this way after hearing their fifth album, Screaming Bloody Murder (2011).
Brown Brigade (2006–2008)
On May 11, 2006, Dave Baksh announced he was leaving Sum 41. He wanted to focus on his own band, Brown Brigade. He started this band with his cousin, Vaughn Lal. Dave played lead guitar in Brown Brigade.
Brown Brigade's first album, Into the Mouth of Badd(d)ness, was released on September 18, 2007. It was available in Canada and Japan. The album was well-received by critics. Even though it wasn't widely released in the US, the band still toured Canada.
Dave mentioned that Brown Brigade was working on new songs. These songs would be different from their usual metal sound. They would include punk rock, funk, and reggae music.
On March 27, 2008, Dave joined Sum 41 on stage in Toronto, Ontario. He played "Pain for Pleasure" with them. Some people thought this meant he was rejoining the band. However, Deryck Whibley said it was just a one-time guest appearance. Dave continued with Brown Brigade.
On September 12, 2008, Dave announced he would stop singing for Brown Brigade. He would still be the lead guitarist. The band looked for a new lead singer. On November 27, 2009, Dave said that Brown Brigade would mostly be a studio band. They would release single songs and work with different artists. Playing live would be rare. Dave's main focus became Organ Thieves.
Organ Thieves (2008–2015)
In mid-2008, Dave Baksh started working with Chuck Coles, another member of Brown Brigade. Dave helped record and produce Chuck's new band, Organ Thieves. By November 2008, Chuck asked Dave to join Organ Thieves for some live shows. Dave then became a full-time member. He recorded the band's first EP, God's Favorite Sons, in January 2009. The EP was first released online for free. Physical copies came out in March 2009. In the same month, Dave also joined the Canadian hardcore punk band Blackjacket for a short tour in the UK.
In October 2009, Organ Thieves began preparing for their first full album. They worked with Greig Nori, who used to produce and manage Sum 41. Organ Thieves became Dave's main music project.
On April 24, 2012, Organ Thieves released their first full-length album. It was called Somewhere Between Free Men and Slaves.
