Dave Baksh (born July 26, 1980) is a Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter. He is also known by his stage name Dave Brownsound. He is best known as the lead guitarist for the rock band Sum 41.

Baksh left Sum 41 in 2006 to focus on his own music. He started a heavy metal and reggae band called Brown Brigade. He rejoined Sum 41 in 2015. Since then, he has helped create three more studio albums with the band. Dave also plays guitar for Organ Thieves and the band Black Cat Attack. In 2019, Baksh helped start a company called Loud & Immortal, which sells band merchandise.

Early Life and Family

Dave Baksh grew up in Ajax, Ontario, Canada. His family is Indo-Canadian, with roots in Indo-Guyanese culture. Dave learned to play guitar with his cousin. He went to school with Sum 41 bandmate Jason McCaslin and their former drummer Steve Jocz. Baksh finished high school in 1998.

Baksh joined Sum 41 in 1997. He was the third member to join after Deryck Whibley and Steve Jocz started the band in 1996. As the lead guitarist, Baksh also sang backing vocals.

In Sum 41's fun alter-ego band, Pain for Pleasure, Baksh used the name Pleasure. He also uses the names "Dave Brownsound" and "Hot Chocolate." These names are a nod to his Indian background and a famous guitar sound called "brown sound." He has said that his favorite Sum 41 songs include "Mr. Amsterdam" and "Pain for Pleasure." He once said his least favorite to play was "Pieces".

On July 23, 2015, Sum 41 played a comeback show. Dave Baksh joined them on stage as a special guest. On August 14, 2015, it was announced that Baksh had officially returned to Sum 41. He would be part of the band's sixth studio album. This album, called 13 Voices, came out on October 7, 2016.

In 2019, Baksh shared that he regretted leaving Sum 41. He felt this way after hearing their fifth album, Screaming Bloody Murder (2011).

Starting Brown Brigade

On May 11, 2006, Baksh announced he was leaving Sum 41. He explained that he wanted to explore his own musical ideas more freely. He decided to focus on his new band, Brown Brigade. He started this band with his cousin Vaughn Lal. Dave plays lead guitar in Brown Brigade.

Brown Brigade's first album, Into the Mouth of Badd(d)ness, was released on September 18, 2007. It came out in Canada and Japan. The album was well-received by critics. Even though it wasn't widely released in the US, the band still toured Canada.

Baksh mentioned that Brown Brigade was working on new songs. These songs would be different from their usual style. They would include punk rock, funk, and reggae, not just metal.

On March 27, 2008, Baksh joined Sum 41 on stage in Toronto, Ontario. He played "Pain for Pleasure" with them. Some people thought this meant he was returning to the band. However, Deryck Whibley said it was just a one-time guest appearance. Dave continued to focus on Brown Brigade.

On September 12, 2008, Baksh announced he would stop singing for Brown Brigade. He would still be the lead guitarist. The band looked for a new lead singer. Later, on November 27, 2009, Baksh said that Brown Brigade would mostly be a studio project. They would release single songs and work with different artists. Playing live would be rare. Baksh's main focus became Organ Thieves.

Joining Organ Thieves

In mid-2008, Baksh started working with his Brown Brigade bandmate Chuck Coles. Coles had a new music project called Organ Thieves. By November 2008, Coles asked Baksh to join the band for some live shows. This led to Baksh becoming a full-time member.

He helped record the band's first EP, God's Favorite Sons, in January 2009. This EP was first released for free online. Physical copies came out in March 2009. In the same month, Baksh also joined a Canadian hardcore punk band called Blackjacket for a short tour in the UK.

In October 2009, Organ Thieves began preparing for their first full album. They worked with Greig Nori, who used to produce and manage Sum 41. Organ Thieves became Baksh's main focus.

On April 24, 2012, their first full-length album, Somewhere Between Free Men and Slaves, was released.

What Gear Does He Use?

Dave Baksh often plays a Duesenberg guitar live. He helped design this guitar with Duesenberg. He uses Dean Markley and Ernie Ball strings. For his sound effects, he uses MXR Effects, a Digitech Whammy, and Dunlop wah pedals. He also uses Marshall Amplification for his amplifiers.
