Deryck Jason Whibley (born 21 March 1980), also known as Bizzy D, is a Canadian musician. He is a singer, songwriter, and record producer. Whibley is best known as the lead singer and guitarist for the rock band Sum 41. He is a founder and the only member who has been with the band since the beginning.

Early Life and Education
Deryck Whibley was born in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in Ajax, Ontario, and went to Southwood Park Public School. Deryck was raised in a home with just one parent. He has always been interested in architecture. He once said he would design houses if he wasn't a musician. As a teenager, he went to Exeter High School. There, he was the captain of his basketball team. He and his bandmates were discovered while playing at a "War of the Bands" event.
Music Career
Forming Sum 41
Deryck Whibley started the band Sum 41 with bassist Grant McVittie. After some changes, the band included Whibley, Steve Jocz, Dave Baksh, and Jason McCaslin. In 1999, Sum 41 signed a record deal with Island Records. They released their first EP, Half Hour of Power, in 2000. Their first album, All Killer No Filler, came out in 2001.
Sum 41's Success
The band became very popular with their song "Fat Lip". This song reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. It is still one of their most successful songs. All Killer No Filler sold millions of copies in the United States, Canada, and the UK. Sum 41 has released many more albums since then. These include Does This Look Infected? (2002) and Chuck (2004). Other albums are Underclass Hero (2007), Screaming Bloody Murder (2011), 13 Voices (2016), Order in Decline (2019), and Heaven :x: Hell (2024). Several of their albums have sold very well in Canada.
Besides singing and playing guitar, Whibley also played drums for a fun side project. This was a heavy metal band called Pain For Pleasure. The members of Sum 41 would pretend to be an 1980s metal band. Whibley later switched to guitar in this project. Sum 41 often performed over 300 shows each year. They went on long global tours that lasted more than a year. The band has been nominated for seven Juno Awards. They won twice, for Group of the Year in 2002 and Rock Album of the Year for Chuck in 2005.
Other Music Work
Beyond Sum 41, Deryck Whibley has also worked as a music producer. He was part of a music management company called Bunk Rock Music. He produced music for other bands, like No Warning.
During a break from Sum 41 in 2005 and 2006, he worked with other famous musicians. He played guitar and sang backing vocals for Tommy Lee's album, Tommyland: The Ride. He also worked with Iggy Pop on his album, A Million in Prizes: The Anthology.
Whibley produced the first album for Jason McCaslin's side project, The Operation M.D.. In 2007, he helped mix the first album for the band Permanent Me. ..... On that album, he produced songs and played guitar.
Acting and Collaborations
Deryck Whibley has also acted a few times. He played a character named Tony in the movie Dirty Love. He also appeared as himself in an episode of King of the Hill.
In 2010, Whibley mixed a song called "Sick + Twisted" for The Operation M.D.'s second album. He also played keyboard and piano on that song. He even joined them live to play guitar on it. He also played some guitar on Methods of Mayhem's album, A Public Disservice Announcement.
He helped write songs for the band 5 Seconds of Summer. These songs appeared on their She's Kinda Hot EP. In 2021, he was featured on a song called "No Defeat for the Brave" by While She Sleeps. On February 18, 2022, Whibley released a song with Simple Plan called "Ruin My Life".
In October 2024, Whibley released his first book. It is a memoir called Walking Disaster: My Life Through Heaven and Hell. The book's title is a nod to a Sum 41 song and their final album.
Instruments and Gear
Deryck Whibley often uses a black customized '72 Fender Telecaster Deluxe guitar when he performs live. This guitar has his famous red X's on it for decoration and good luck. He also has a signature guitar with Squier, which is a brand by Fender. This Squier guitar comes in black and white. It also has the two red X's and his signature "Deryck" on the headstock.
Whibley has used many Gibson guitars over the years. These include the Flying V, Les Paul, and SG. His first guitar was a Gibson Marauder, given to him by his mother. This guitar was used in some of Sum 41's music videos, like "Fat Lip" and "In Too Deep". He also uses special microphones and Marshall amplifiers. In March 2023, Whibley started selling some of his instrument collection.
Personal Life
Deryck Whibley married fellow singer Avril Lavigne in 2006. They had been friends since she was 17 years old. They sometimes performed together. Their wedding took place on July 15, 2006, in California. About 110 guests attended. After a little over three years, Lavigne filed for divorce in October 2009. Their divorce was finalized in November 2010.
On August 30, 2015, Whibley married model Ariana Cooper in Los Angeles. They welcomed their first child in February 2020. Their second child was born in February 2023. The family currently lives in Encino.
Health Challenges
Deryck Whibley has experienced chronic back pain. This started with a back injury during a concert in 2007. In August 2010, he was hospitalized after an incident in Japan. It was found that he had injured his back again. Despite advice, he continued to perform with the band. He injured his back again in April 2013, which caused him to miss some shows.
In May 2014, Whibley shared that he had been hospitalized a month earlier for severe health issues. In September 2023, his wife announced he was in the hospital with pneumonia and COVID-19. This led to heart issues. He responded well to treatment and was released the next day. In July 2024, Sum 41 had to cancel some tour dates because Whibley had injured his back again.
