Playing for Clubs

Matthew Olosunde started his soccer journey in the United States. He played for several teams as he grew up.

Starting at New York Red Bulls

Matthew was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Trenton, New Jersey. He began playing soccer at the New York Red Bulls Academy. He started as a right-winger. He played for their under-16 and under-18 academy teams.

In 2014, he even played for the New York Red Bulls Reserves. This was a step up for him. After playing in the 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, he left the Red Bulls. He wanted to continue his education.

Joining Manchester United

In January 2016, Matthew made a big move. He joined Manchester United, a famous club in England. Reports said the club offered him online courses from the University of Oxford. This helped convince him to join. He officially joined the team in March 2016.

He first played for the Under-18 team. Then he moved up to the Under-23 team. He played 18 games in his first season with the Under-23s. In April 2017, he was even nominated for a "Goal of the Month" award. This was for a great goal he scored in a tournament. He traveled with the main team for some big games. Matthew left Manchester United in June 2019.

Playing for Rotherham United

On July 5, 2019, Matthew signed a two-year contract. He joined Rotherham United. He scored his first professional goal for the club. This happened in an FA Cup game against Everton in January 2021. He decided to leave Rotherham United in June 2021.

Time at Preston North End

Matthew then joined Preston North End on June 30, 2021. He signed a two-year deal with them. In his first year, he faced some challenges. He played in only two games. This was because he had injuries to his Achilles tendon and groin.

Moving to The New Saints

On February 16, 2024, Matthew signed with The New Saints. This club plays in the Cymru Premier league. He signed a one-year deal. He left the club at the end of the 2024–25 season.

Playing for His Country

Matthew has also played for the United States national teams. He represented his country at different age levels.

Youth National Teams

He played for the United States under-17 team. He played 22 matches for them. He was part of the team that went to the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. He played in one game during that World Cup. Because of his family background, he could also play for the Nigeria national team.

Senior National Team Debut

Matthew made his first appearance for the senior United States team. This happened on May 28, 2018. He came into the game as a substitute against Bolivia.
