Maung Maung Kha (Burmese: မောင်မောင်ခ [màʊɰ̃ màʊɰ̃ kʰa̰]) was an important leader in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). He served as the Prime Minister of Burma for many years, from 1977 to 1988.
Early Life and Education
Maung Maung Kha was born in Yangon (then called Rangoon), which is the largest city in Myanmar. His birthday was June 7, 1920. His parents were Khin Tint and Chit Pe.
In 1937, he started studying engineering at the University of Rangoon. However, he left university in 1941 during his final year. He chose to join the Burma Independence Army (BIA) instead.
Military Career
After joining the Burma Independence Army, Maung Maung Kha completed his military training. He became a member of the Burmese armed forces. This was during the time when Japan occupied Burma, from 1942 to 1945.
After Burma gained its independence in 1948, Maung Maung Kha continued his military service. He rose through the ranks and became a Colonel. He also served as the Director of Defence Industries for the Burmese Armed Forces. This role involved overseeing the production of military equipment.
Political Leadership
Colonel Maung Maung Kha began his political career in 1972. He joined General Ne Win's military government as a cabinet member. His first role was the Minister of Industry.
In 1974, the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma was formed. A new constitution was also adopted. Maung Maung Kha continued to serve as the Minister of Industry. Later, he also became the Minister of Mines.
Prime Minister of Myanmar
On March 29, 1977, Maung Maung Kha was appointed as the 8th Prime Minister of Myanmar. He held this important position for over a decade.
However, there was growing unrest in the country during his time as Prime Minister. Because of this unrest, Maung Maung Kha was replaced. On July 26, 1988, Tun Tin took over as Prime Minister. Maung Maung Kha passed away on April 30, 1995.
