About Maurane's Life
Early Life and Music Training (1960–1976)
Claudine Luypaerts was born in Ixelles, Brussels, Belgium, on 12 November 1960. Her father, Guy-Philippe Luypaerts, was a composer. Her mother, Jeannie Patureaux, taught piano.
When she was young, Maurane tried learning the violin. But she didn't like formal lessons. She preferred to teach herself to sing and play the piano. Later, she started playing the guitar instead.
In 1976, she won second place in a music competition. The next year, she performed in a show called Lundis d'Hortense. For this show, she chose her first stage name, "Claudie Claude."
Starting Her Career and Starmania (1979–1988)
In 1979, Maurane performed in a show called Brel en mille temps. There, she met French songwriter Pierre Barouh. He owned the Saravah music label. He helped her release her first songs starting in 1980. She used the name "Claude Maurane." This name was inspired by a director named Francis Morane.
Her first songs, like "J'me roule en boule" (1980), were not very successful. She took small jobs, singing in the street or in cafés. She also sang backup for other artists.
Her career really began in 1983. She performed at the Sentier des Halles in Paris. This show was a big hit. It led to her first album, Danser, released in 1986.
In 1988, Michel Berger chose her for a role in the musical Starmania. She played Marie-Jeanne, a role first played by Fabienne Thibeault. She toured with the show for six months. It was hard for her to balance the musical with her own singing career. So, she decided to leave the show.
Popular Albums and Live Shows (1989–1994)
Her second album, Maurane, came out in 1989. It was a big success, selling 150,000 copies. This album included one of her most famous songs, "Toutes les mamas." Because of its popularity, she performed at the Olympia in Paris. She then went on an international tour, even performing in Japan.
In 1989, Maurane won two awards: the Radio France Internationale's female Octave and an award from the Festival d'été de Québec.
In 1991, she released the album Ami ou ennemi. This album was also very popular, selling nearly 450,000 copies. It featured songs like "Ça casse" and "Sur un prélude de Bach." The song "Sur un prélude de Bach" became a huge hit for her. The album also had a song about her role in Starmania, called "Qui es-tu Marie-Jeanne?"
She performed at the Olympia again in 1992. Then she toured Europe in 1992 and 1993. She also played at music festivals. A live album, Une fille très scène, was released in 1994. It was recorded during her Olympia concerts.
In 1994, Maurane won the "Francophone Artist of the Year" award at the Victoires de la Musique. She won over other famous singers like Celine Dion.
New Music and Helping Others (1995–1998)
In November 1995, Maurane released her fourth studio album, Différente. She worked with Philippe Lafontaine and Jean-Claude Vannier on this album. After the album, she went on a concert tour.
Maurane was well-liked by other artists. She often helped with charity events. Since 1993, she had been involved in fighting AIDS. She performed in concerts to raise money for the Sol En Si association. Many other artists joined her.
From 1996 to 2013, Maurane also took part in the Enfoirés concerts. These concerts supported the Restos du cœur, a charity that helps people in need.
In 1998, she released L'un pour l'autre, a collection of her best songs. It included five new tracks. The main song, "L'un pour l'autre," won her an award.
Later Albums and Autobiography (2000–2008)
In 2000, Maurane released her fifth album, Toi du monde. This album had a more serious feel and was influenced by world music. She worked with a new team of musicians on it.
Her album Quand l'humain danse came out in 2003. This was a very personal album. It included songs written by famous songwriters like Jean-Jacques Goldman. She also sang duets with Marc Lavoine, Lara Fabian, and Véronique Sanson. A live album from her tour, L'heureux tour, was released in 2004.
In January 2007, Maurane released Si aujourd'hui. In June of the same year, she published her autobiography. It was called "La Vie en Rouge."
Tributes, TV, and Final Albums (2009–2014)
In 2009, Maurane released a special album. It was a tribute to her friend, the singer Claude Nougaro. The album was called Nougaro ou l'espérance en l'homme. In 2011, she released Fais-moi une fleur, an album with a jazz sound. She recorded it in New York.
From 2012 to 2014, she was a judge on the French TV talent show Nouvelle Star. She judged alongside other musicians.
In 2014, she released the song "Trop Forte." It was about the challenges of being overweight. This was a topic Maurane had not sung about before. It was the first song from her album Ouvre, released in November 2014. This album also included other personal songs, like a letter to her daughter.
Health Issues and Last Project (2016–2018)
In 2016, Maurane had health problems. She needed surgery on her vocal cords. This meant she had to cancel concerts and stay away from the stage until 2018.
In March 2018, she announced her next album. It would be a tribute to the famous singer Jacques Brel. She said she had dreamed of making this album for many years. On 3 May 2018, she sang one of Brel's songs, "La chanson des vieux amants," with Typh Barrow. She performed it again on 6 May 2018, at the Iris Festival. This was her last public performance.
Less than 24 hours later, on 7 May 2018, Maurane passed away at her home in Schaerbeek, Belgium. Investigations showed that her death was accidental, likely due to a fall. Her funeral was held on 17 May 2018. Many people and artists came to say goodbye.
On 12 October 2018, her album Brel was released. Her daughter and pianist finished it after her passing. The album became very popular in Belgium.
Maurane's Musical Style
Throughout her career, Maurane sang duets with many artists. These included Catherine Lara, Michel Fugain, Eddy Mitchell, and Lara Fabian. She also released two albums as part of a trio called HLM. The other members were Steve Houben and Charles Loos.
Maurane's Family Life
On 29 December 1993, Maurane and singer Pablo Villafranca had a daughter named Lou. They had married in June 1992. Even after they separated, Pablo Villafranca continued to support her music. He sang backup on her 1995 album and appeared in her music videos.
