Early Life and Education
Maurice Roy was born in Quebec City in 1905. He was one of three children. His father was a judge and a friend of Maurice Duplessis, a famous politician. Maurice was first taught at home.
He became a priest on June 12, 1927. Before that, he studied at the Seminary of Quebec from 1915 to 1923. He earned a degree in theology from Université Laval in 1927. He then studied in Rome and Paris, earning a doctorate in philosophy in 1929.
From 1929 to 1939, Roy taught theology at Quebec's Grand Seminary. He also worked as a chaplain at the University of Laval.
Service During World War II
During World War II, Maurice Roy served in the Canadian Army. He was a chaplain, helping soldiers with their spiritual needs. He served in many countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy, and France. He reached the rank of colonel.
He was recognized for his bravery during the war. He received the Order of the British Empire for his "extremely courageous conduct." After returning to Canada in 1945, he went back to teaching.
Becoming a Bishop
On February 22, 1946, Pope Pius XII chose Maurice Roy to be the Bishop of Trois Rivières. He became a bishop on May 1, 1946. His motto as a bishop was In nomine Jesu, which means "In the name of Jesus."
He also became the Bishop of the Catholic Military Vicariate of Canada in June 1946. He held this position for 35 years, until 1982.
Archbishop and Cardinal
Just over a year after becoming a bishop, Maurice Roy was made Archbishop of Quebec on June 2, 1947. In 1956, he became the Primate of the Canadian Church. This meant he was the most senior bishop in Canada.
Roy was part of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). This was a very important meeting that changed many things in the Catholic Church. On February 22, 1965, Pope Paul VI made him a Cardinal.
He also held important roles in the Roman Curia, which is like the Pope's government. He was the first President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity and the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace starting in 1967. Later, in 1973, he became the first President of the Pontifical Council for the Family.
In 1971, Roy was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. He retired from his roles in the Roman Curia in 1976. He also took part in the elections for new Popes in 1978. He stepped down as Archbishop of Quebec on March 20, 1981, after 33 years.
Maurice Roy passed away in Quebec at the age of 80. He is buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of Notre-Dame. Many important events in his life, like his baptism and burial, happened at this same Cathedral.
