Max Cahner was born in Bad Godesberg, a town in Germany, on December 3, 1936. His father was Jewish-Catalan and his mother was Catalan. They had left Spain because of the Spanish Civil War, a big conflict happening in their home country.
In 1937, his family moved to Galicia, another part of Spain. They wanted to avoid problems caused by the rise of National Socialism in Germany. By 1939, they moved to Barcelona, a major city in Catalonia. Max started studying chemistry at the University of Barcelona in 1952.
Working for Catalan Culture
Max Cahner became involved with Serra d'Or, an important Catalan magazine. He helped prepare the magazine for publishing. This magazine was published by the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, a famous monastery.
Because of his activities to support Catalan culture and language, Max Cahner was forced to leave Francoist Spain in 1964. This was a time when the government in Spain made it difficult to use the Catalan language or celebrate its culture. Even while he was living outside Spain, he continued his work on Catalan literature.
