What the Movie is About
The story begins when Max Dugan (played by Jason Robards), who hasn't been seen in a long time, suddenly visits his daughter, Nora McPhee (played by Marsha Mason). Nora is already dealing with a lot of problems in her life. Max brings some big promises and also some sad news: he says he is going to die soon.
While staying with Nora, Max also gets to know his grandson, Michael (played by Matthew Broderick). They quickly become good friends. During this time, a police officer (played by Donald Sutherland) helps Nora after her car is stolen. He soon becomes her boyfriend, adding more interesting twists to Nora's life.
A real-life professional baseball player, Charley Lau, also makes an appearance in the movie. He plays himself and is hired by Max Dugan to help Michael improve his hitting skills for his little league baseball team.
