Max Kohnstamm (22 May 1914 – 20 October 2010) was a Dutch historian and diplomat. A diplomat is someone who helps countries talk to each other. He played a big part in creating the European Union.

Growing Up in Amsterdam
Max Kohnstamm was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on May 22, 1914. His father, Philip Kohnstamm, was a smart man who studied physics and philosophy. Max's family had connections to important companies. His grandfather helped start the company now known as Royal Dutch Shell. An uncle helped create the steel industry in the Netherlands.
During World War II, Max and his uncle were held hostage by the Germans. They were kept at a camp called Beekvliet. Even though they were different ages, they became very close friends there.
His Education Journey
Max Kohnstamm went to University of Amsterdam to study history. After that, he received a special scholarship. This allowed him to study at American University in Washington, D.C., in the United States.
From 1938 to 1939, he traveled across the United States. He wrote letters to his father about what he saw. He also shared his worries about the war that was about to begin.
Working for His Country and Europe
After the war, Max Kohnstamm worked for the Queen of the Netherlands. He was the private secretary to Queen Wilhelmina from 1945 to 1948. Then, he worked for the Dutch Foreign Office. He was in charge of European affairs.
Max was very important in building the European Union. In the 1950s, he helped create the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). This group helped European countries work together on coal and steel. Later, he helped form the European Economic Community. This group helped countries trade and work together more easily.
He also became the first President of the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. This is a special university for people studying Europe. He also led the European part of the Trilateral Commission. This group brings together leaders from North America, Europe, and Asia.
Making a Difference
Max Kohnstamm was a member of the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Group. This is a private meeting of important people from different countries.
In 2004, he received the 'Freedom from Fear' Four Freedoms Award. This award honors people who work for human rights.
His son, Jacob Kohnstamm, is also a well-known person.
Later Life and Passing
Max Kohnstamm passed away in Amsterdam on October 20, 2010. He was 96 years old.
